Premium Touring Luggage Collection
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:48:54 PM »

Has anybody been using the new Harley Premium Touring Luggage Collection?  I need a bag that can hold a full face helmet and these look nice.

I bought the new suitcase looking one for the rear rack. I used it twice - to and from Sturgis last year, and last month doing a 1 week tour to the Smokies, Dragon, BRP, etc.

When I got home, I noticed the the inner plastic pan, or whatever it is, had cracked in the radius areas right where the luggage rack bars were located. The bag was not overloaded, nor abused, but I suspect it's just from the wind and vibrations, etc.

I pointed out the 2 year warranty to the dealer in mid-August, and dropped it off.  Last week, I stopped by and evidently Harley questioned why I thought there was a 2 year warranty.  I quickly did a screen shot of their own friggin' website where the item is listed, that prominently states that.  I haven't heard anything since, but suspect they are inspecting it to figure out how best to blame me.

Be cautious!

That, IMHO, is what puts a lot of folks over the edge.  Presumably, they pass the "loss" back to the OEM.  Plus, they already have staff to handle these eventualities!  It seems sometimes they would rather  screw you out of $5, as opposed to making $25 honestly!  Ya' think the dang bag should take the rigors of riding on a motorcycle!!!!????

Mine cracked in several places on it first trip to Alaska and back.  Took it to my local dealer and he took a new one off the shelf and handed it to me, no questions asked.  The plastic inside liner is cheap and needs to be reinforced.  Will come up with some sort of additional liner before I use this new one.  This seems to be a well known problem if you do a search.

I also have the premium luggage rack bag. I haven't seen any cracks on the interior, but have noticed the exterior fabric has delaminated in several spots resulting in bubbles. Anybody else experiencing the same? Wonder what the dealers response will be to that? Let me guess, "you must have been riding in the rain..." PJ

Where did your hear about these issues being discussed? The only topics here, that I was part of, was more about the differences between the current version and the older version?  Never previously saw anything referring to the liner falling apart?

That said, I think customizing that plastic 'bathtub' pan will be a tough thing without special equipment. I was thinking the same thing if they gave me a hard time. Seems that piece is made out of ABS, which isn't the most impact absorbant material, especially being that thin. Polycarbonate would be way better, but you'd still have to build some kind of a plug to recreate the shape as the vertical walls of the tub is what maintains the shape of the bag.

Either way, it'll cost more to reengineer the bag and make it correctly than the thing is even worth. The one thing you could try is simply using some sort of a flat piece of material between the rack and the bag to eliminate all the stress hitting in those narrow sections.

Frankly, I'm hoping that Harley has gotten enough of these back that the mfr has already come up with a stronger pan.  We'll see.  I'll share what they eventually say.

Thx!

I purchased one before a trip to Canada, it is th one that sits on the tour pack rack and straps with quick connect on the straps. I really like it it has a pocket on top that the harley touring maps fit in and many other things. Real handy and easy to install and remove.

Have had no problems with it.

Mine did the same thing, the dealer and the fine folks at HD customer service refused to replace it.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but after I brought it back after my August trip, it sat at the dealer for a while, and I guess it eventually got shipped back to MOCO.  Toward the end of last month, the dealer called and said he had a new one for me.  Upon inspection, it's the exact same contruction, so I know it won't last long.  When I get some free time, I'm going to see if I can take it apart and strenthen it up some.  Love the bag and the dimensions, but they've got to solve this weak structural liner problem!

If you run into this, don't take no from the dealer.  Call the MOCO and scream about it!!!  That's the only way we're going to nudge them in the right direction.

I was at Bikefest in Vegas and purchased the large bag that fits ove the sissy bar. It is made by SAC. He told me they were the supplier for Harley but there contract was done. The bag was half the cost without the Harley name on it. Check out the SAC website. They actually make it better now so it will fit over different sized sissy bars not the elastic like they used to have.

I had a sissy bar back on my Deuce from SAC and it definitely was the same as Harley's, but cheaper without the logo.

However, this thread is about the Premium Touring Luggage, not thr SAC stuff.  Whole different animal.
