FLHXSE2 AMPLIFIER PROBLEM...again.
« on: September 08, 2012, 08:03:30 AM »

Got halfway to the cabin and the radio completely cut out. No volume at all. All of the functions work correctly on the H&K head unit.

Pulled the side cover and checked the fuses. All good.

Pulled the fairing and checked all connections to the amp, radio, speakers etc. All good.

My assumption is the amp bellied up.....again. Second time on this bike. Last time the amp went it was only one channel. I took it to the dealer and they replaced it that day. Today is a different ball game seeing as how my warranty expired 3 days ago.

Is there anything that I am missing to check? Any way to verify that it is the amplifier?

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

First bit of advice I can offer is to immediately contact the dealer and H-D and let them know it has failed again and you believe they should cover it even though you are technically three days out of warranty.  With a previous history of this problem not only on your bike but on many, many others, they should take care of it with no argument.

Jerry is right...they should do the right thing. But the dealer has to go to bat for you with Harley...it depends if they are a "good" dealer or a typical one. If not then you will be on the phone with HD customer relations which is not any fun. That outcome also seems to depend on who you speak to.....

Agreed Fired00d!

Spoke with the service manager. Said to bring it by Monday and he will see what he can figure out with it and how we can get the tunes back in it as quick as possible. They've always been really good with my family and I. End of the conversation he said "I made a note about your first call to me about this on the 17th of Aug when you first went on vacation" I started to interrupt, "Say what...this just happened...." Light bulb went off. Gotcha. He then said to make sure to be there Monday. Guaranteed I'm there before the majority of the employees Monday.

We'll see how it goes....

I hate to put another one of those amps in, but if it's free I suppose that's better than the alternative of replacing the amp and all of the 1 ohm speakers.

I had the amp go dead on my 2011 SESG, was replaced under warranty. The "New "amp lasted 1 week, sound would cut out, if I restarted the radio it would play for a while and cut out again. This could happen every 15 minutes or last for 2 hours. Back to the dealer and another amp was ordered. Still waiting on the parts. I asked the dealer if they had a problem with radio amps, he said none that I have ever heard of......

Well it took me a week but I finally got authorization from Milwaukee to get it looked at. Went down first thing Monday morning. Basically they verified it wasn't working. Service manager at my local dealer was super cool as usual, but was running into a bunch of flack with corporate. Dropping it off Monday to be "diagnosed". I'm not holding my breath yet. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to get hosed on this.

My argument would be that the orginial amp had a 2 year warrenty and the replacement amp should also have a 2 year warrenty.

Agreed. The problem is that the initial amp went out the day after I bought the bike.

Replaced under warranty even though it was expired. Different part number on the new one. Hopefully this one lasts.

Radio plays for a while and cuts out. Restart the radio and it plays for a while. Had the original amp replaced, had the replaced amp replaced, still same story. Now its time for a radio replacement. The story continues.

At the risk of divulging that I am an attorney, if you had a documented problem while still under warranty, it doesn't matter that you are now out of warranty. It has to be repaired as many times as needed until fixed.  The problem comes when the first notice to the dealer comes after the warr expires...unless it's been documented by a recall, etc.
