I'm about to start this project and was wondering exactly how you get the metal ring off.  Specific directions are appreciated.

I used a pear of ring pliers and unscrewed it!

Snap ring pliers or small needle nose pliers.   Open headset connector spring loaded cap,  inside you will see the metal retaining ring. The retaining ring has two slots cut into it,  put the tips of the snap ring pliers or tips of needle nose into both slots and unscrew ring counter-clockwise.  It is not on very tight.

Well, I'm happy to say I finished the project and it turned out great.  It was easy, especially with all the help of the great folks on this forum! [smiley=banana.gif] Thanks for all the great help.  It is really a nice change from the original setup.  Here's to the forum [smiley=drink.gif]
