Lost my best friend
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:39:24 PM »

On July 8 of this year, I lost my best friend and riding partner, Roy Winslow in a very unnecessary MC accident. My wife and I are from Columbia Falls, Mt. and we had traveled to San Diego to visit Roy. Roy was the beverage manager at a resturant called Anthonys Fish Grotto on the San Diego Bay. We were on our way to Anthonys for dinner when suddenly the traffic in front of us darted out of our lane. They had narrowly missed a section of a large couch laying in the freeway. Roy hit the couch almost immediatly. I layed my bike down to avoid hitting the couch myself. My wife, Kim, and I were informed at the hospital we were taken to that Roy did not survive. Our accident happened around 6:30pm. The couch had  been in the freeway since around 2pm.
I now stop and pick things out of our local highways, even small objects, thinking that maybe I can save someone from the same fate as Roy. I ask all of you out there to do the same.
Ride safe and enjoy as you never know when your turn might come along.

Very sorry to read of your loss, Steve.  I'm sure Anthony will be remembered and missed.  Stopping to move potential hazards is a fitting tribute to him.  Just be careful.

Sorry for the loss of your Friend Roy.

I see cargo loads being hauled all the time that are barely tied down with rope if tied down at all, I also see animals being hauled loose.
I know LE here in Cali. comes down hard for losing objects from your load and was told by LE that animals not in a crate that is tied down properly is Illegal.

Again, Sorry for this senseless situation and wonder why the couch was in the roadway for that long.   :nixweiss:

That couch was on the freeway for 4 1/2 hours?  How could it be left there for so long?  The CHP or a responsible party should have taken it away hours earlier.  What a waste and an unnecessary tragedy.

So sorry to hear about your friend.  I hope you find comfort in the good memories.

Anthony's is my favorite restaurant in San Diego, I go there every time I go to SD.  I wish I had known Roy was a fellow biker.  We'll have a drink in his honor next time we go.

So sorry to hear about your tragic loss. Will do my best to take the time to follow your lead and move stuff out of the way (when safe and possible); might inconvienince me for 5 minutes, but given how quick things can go wrong just like this, it is worth the time.

Anytime I can safely remove objects from the road I do.......now I will think of your friend each time I do this! I have no idea how it feels to lose someone in a scooter mishap, so I will just say sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear about your accident and the loss of your friend! Ate at Anthony's many times when we lived in SD. It truly sucks when something like this happens that could have been avoided.

Prayers go out to the family and friends.

As riders, we understand there are risks involved.  But, no one expects to encounter a couch in the road.  It is hard to imagine it was there for all that time and no one moved it!  I'm really sorry to hear you lost your best friend due to such an avoidable circumstance.  My condolences to you, your wife and Roy's family.  We never know when it will be our time to go!  Take solice in knowing Roy was doing something he loved to do with his best friend too!  Ride safe!

Such a tragedy that this could have been avoided hours ahead of time.  I too move stuff out of the highway when possible.  Once ran over a muffler the truck in front of me straddled.  I was far enough behind to avoid but couldn't due to traffic and it was sitting straddle across the lane.  Needless to say, I made it, stopped and promply threw it to the side of the road.

The next time I stop to remove an item, I'll think of you and your buddy that has gone on.  My prayers go out to his family and you as a friend.

Wow!  That is really a sad story, unecessary, pure laziness and disconcern in our society today.  Very frustrating, our thoughts and prayers are with you and the his family!

Steve....sorry for your friend Roy.

This is just a crime where idiots drops stuff all of the time.  Stopping to "pick" something off the road when the traffic is moving at 70mph on one hand is risky, on the other hand is risky.  Not sure there is a good answer beside fining the crap out of anyone carrying loose loads.

I live in San Diego and this happens more than one might expect. Not to stereo-type, but people from South of the border are always carrying 3x the load size a the vehicle --- sofas, matresses, refrigerators, TVs stacked 3 and 4 high.  This is pure BS.

I know... a few years ago one of the persons from South of the border dropped a sofa 3 cars ahead of me.... the car behind him hit it and smashed it into a million 'SPEARS'.... one which hit my driving light and shattered into a million pieces, broke the can and mount.  I was super fortunate for the perfect timing. Just not my time yet.  The idiot that dropped the sofa just kept on driving off into the sunset..... pure BS.

Again....very sorry for the loss of Roy
