Bad vibration
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:39:51 PM »

For the last 200 miles or so, my 110 (09 CUSE4, 22000 miles) has started to be very rough, up to 2500rpm.  And getting worse.  To put it into context, it feels like riding a non-rubber mount Sportster.  If you stand beside it and gradually increase the revs while watching the air filter, it's vibrating like crazy till 2500 and suddenly it's still.

Engine mounts look fine.

As it's in any gear, it's engine related, rules out transmission.

Oil pressure is fine, power is fine.

I'm pretty certain the compensator is in a bad way (new SE type one due to arrive tomorrow!)

So, the questions:

1) Anyone else had this, and if so what was it?

2) Could it be the compensator?  As it's at the crank end, if it was out of balance, it could do this, but has that ever happened?

3) What else could it be?  I'm kind of hoping that as oil pressure and power is fine, the vibration pretty much goes at 2500rpm, and there's no [apparent] problem with the crankshaft position sensor that it's not going to be the dreaded crank scissoring....  :nervous:  Main bearings?

I'm REALLY hoping the compensator replacement will fix it.....

Check very carefully to see if a bolt, screw, or rock has wedged between engine and frame. I had an EXTREME vibration on my 2010 SEUC and after 2 days of checking, I finally found a small 6 mm by 1 inch bolt had wedged between engine and frame on the left rear. It vibrated so bad you could barely keep your feet on the floor boards. It was almost not visible fr the top, so check top and bottom. Good luck

Thanks 2h, I'll have a good check.

No, never, Scott.  They are kind of thin on the ground around here!  SE Slipons, Big Sucker AC, V&H Power Dual headers, Super SERT map - that's it.  Maintained (by me) perfectly, even though I say so myself.  Never allowed to go over mileage for a service, use Amsoil in the motor, Redline Shockproof heavy in the trans, Redline V-Twin primary in the primary.  Fastidious about services - *everything* in the list is done.   Doesn't get thrashed either.

Well, I went over it with a fine tooth comb, looking for anything trapped between the frame and the motor (I thought it would be unlikely, give the vibes going at 2500rpm) but found nothing.  Only thing I found was the left side muffler had slipped forward on the header and could rotate.  Fixed that, though I doubt it will have any bearing on the problem.

Can't try it to see, because it's still in pieces fitting the SE Compensator, due to the lack of a 1-3/4" wrench to hold the crank while torquing the bolt.  I mean, FFS!!!!  Why did they make those flats so big?  Who do they expect to have a 1-3/4" wrench lying around in their toolkit??  Perhaps an HD plan to be able to sell another "special tool" at grossly inflated prices......  [sigh]

Does FFS mean what I think it means? ::). I hope you find that vibration.  I know how aggravating that is. I've been chasing one down for 2 months on my 04.  After changing motor mount for the 3rd time, it's now getting a new tune.   I am hoping some added gas will solve this problem.  Good luck in the hunt.  :2vrolijk_21:

use a pipe wrench for backup.

Yes, thought about that - but the bolt gets tightened to 140 foot lbs, so a pipe wrench isn't going to do really.  Big chance of burring up the hex too,  Going to grind out the jaws of an adjustable that nearly opens wide enough.

Eqcons I have a 09 SERG and V&H power duals.I was having the same problem and took the whole exhaust apart trying to find problem.Noise was in every gear, neutral, sitting still or going down the road.Drove me nuts in Sturgis for a week. Finally found the problem, actually R&R found it for me.The bracket that holds the head pipes on to the frame on the right side just forward of the trans was cracked clean through but could not see it without taking off the pipes. This crack made like a tuning fork vibration that was felt in the foot boards bars and seat, mirrors were useless at 2800 rpm.The fix was to buy a new bracket and weld gusetts on the 90 degree bends in the bracket. Now smooth as silk and no noise.Hope this helps and keep us informed.

Thanks Digga - I did visually check that bracket, but I'll have a very close examination of it now!
