Grey Ghost, funny you would catch that little detail. Shows how anal most folks on this site are.

Actually, this photo was taken just before the tragedy caused by the caribiner pulling out the pin which allowed the clothes bar to wiggle itself loose, causing the jackets to fall off the bar. One of the jackets hit the release on one of the tie downs on one of the bikes causing it to tip over into the other bike, snapping one of the other tie downs with such force that it shot back knocking out the hinge and the spring holding up the rear door. Since we were driving 65 mph at the time, the forward force caused the door to fall open. Both bikes slid out the back door and under the tires causing all four to simultaneously go flat. Sensing some additional drag behind me and assuming we were just heading up a hill, I naturally floored it and dragged the whole mess down the freeway for over a mile until a guy in a Fiat 500 with a targa top pulled up beside me and waved like crazy until I pulled over.

As you can well imaging, I won't be attaching the caribiner to that clothes rod pin in that fashion ever again.

Well Sheeesh . . . I just thought I would helpful and maybe prevent a small mess. Had no idea that a simple little thing could cause such a big mess.

Sorry to hear about it. How bad were the bikes??

AMEN Brother!!!

Have a t-shirt from the 1996 Sturgis rally that states:  "If you see my bike on a trailer, call 911 'cause it's stolen!"

Get more comments on that shirt, BTW.

Sorry...didn't mean to  :jack: the thread....trailer discussion continues..... :2vrolijk_21:

I thought my story was written bizarrely enough so no one would believe it. I thought the humor in your noticing the caribiner/pin combination deserved to be taken to the extreme level most of us take our bikes. Now I see some folks might actually think the accident happened as described.

Sorry to have misled you. As we all can see, nothing good ever happens if you trailer a motorcycle. They are meant to be ridden. Now if only I could convince my wife and dogs of that.

Buy early,

Happened to a cousin of a friends girlfriend's boyfriend in Arizona. He saw the bike flipping across the lane in the rearview, pulled over quickly and jumped out forgetting to put his truck in park. The truck and trailer are now at the bottom of the Grand Canyon in the Colorado River. The bikes had fallen out of the trailer and were banged up but ridable. The police showed up hours later and asked why they were still there. The reply was that it was too far to ride to the next town and they were waiting for a trailer!   :huepfenlol2:

Yes I had trouble figuring out your four flat trailer tires.

Better wrap the bungee over the bar.

(Good catch Grey Ghost, I had to research back through the whole post to understand what was going on.)

Glad to see that you and the wife are getting out and about regardless of the method.  :bananarock:  :bananarock:

Is this a Fiat 500 with a targa top?

That's the one, except the car in the story was red ;)

I can only imagine the look on your face when you rounded the trailer.

Had it actually happened, it would have looked something like this...

Ya all don't ride your bikes  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Couldn't resist.

Like others on this site have found - someday most realize that yes, there is a time when trailering is acceptable. It is best when the the vocal naysayers have to resort to the trailer for health or other issues.  :soapbox:
