I have the cartridge kit too. Figure I'll carry it until I use it up.

Also have the "air" kit that uses a spark plug hole. Never tried that either, but past experience tells me I can run the bike on one cylinder with a bent valve.

Porthole... do you have more info on the "air" kit that uses a spark plug hole?  Just curious to see what it looks like.

I'm not Duane but can offer a suggestion.  These things have been around as long as internal combustion engines fired by spark plugs have been on the road.  There are kits to be had ( http://www.amazon.com/Moroso-62385-Spark-Plug-Hose/dp/B000CON1VE ) but hit a local and decent auto parts store.  They'll very likely have fittings that fit all the common spark plug holes.  They get used to pressurize cylinders while doing things like replacing valve stem seals with the heads still on.  With the correct fitting in hand then just build downhill with other fittings and line to get to the valve stem.

I'll be digging it out for the MV trip, will post the info then. I got it before the portable compressors were "so portable".
Picked it up a the NYC bike show years ago.

Has anyone tried the trick with ether if the bead of the tire comes loose?

after the small explosion the tire is back on.

you might want to try this in a controlled environment first, instead of an emergency

"small compressor"... how much room do these take up?  Space is tight on our 10 day trips.

I wonder if those CO2 inflators work or just inflate enough to get you off the highway.

Here is a newer version of the one I have - Craftsman 12V Portable Inflator w/ Digital Tire Pressure Gauge.

They can be surprisingly small and still work well enough to pump a tire up in a few minutes.  The ones I have occupy the space of approximately a package of Twinkies or just a bit more.

Be a bit careful with the CO2 inflators.  Carbon Dioxide expands a lot as it heats up.  You really do need to start out with the tire looking low on air.

A couple pics of the one I have.  It comes with the mushroom plugs and takes up hardly any room at all in a saddlebag. :2vrolijk_21:

I've got the Stop and Go plugger and compressor too. But haven't had the need to use them yet. Just check the air compressor occasionally.
