Anybody else have Tinnitus, (constant ear ringing)
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:31:24 PM »

Apparently my wife & I have Tinnitus.  I know that it is incurable but I was wondering if anyone on this site has had any luck in obtaining some relief.  It started about two summers ago, as soon as I started to have the constant ringing in my ears I started wearing ear plugs and rarely ride without them.  I have RHTD for the exhaust which doesn't help matters.  It seems to bother me more in the AM than during the day and starts up again in the evening.  Man it's bag enough approaching 60 but the added complications just make it seem worse.  Should have got a Wing.  Any other sufferers out there?

Have had it for years.  Realized that's what it was when I was still hearing the cicadas when I went to bed, and it was in the fall.

Earplugs for sure.  Try different plugs to find some that REALLY work.  Should be a positive seal.  The soft molded "Christmas Tree" style works best, but tend to irritate my ears inside a helmet.  Dense memory type foam work well also, but sometime take a couple of trys to get to seal properly.  Best I have found are some flesh colored ones from the Target pharmacy, Mack's I believe.  Also saw a review in Motorcycle Consumer News for Mighty Plugs.  The reviewer said that they were the best he had ever used, but pricey.

I have found that some foods and medications can exacerbate the condition for me.  Haven't found any cures.

I have it and it sucks! The only way I don't notice it is if I am near a bunch of noise.

I've had it since childhood.  I rarely think about it anymore.  Whenever it crosses my mind, though, it bugs me for quite a while.

Dumb kids, anyway!  :soapbox:

Have had it for years but my hearing is still fairly good.
The only upside is mine sounds like cicadas and I have always loved the song of cicadas.

Also have had it for years... primarily due to unprotected exposure to Jet Engines and such.

What I have noticed, is that when I wear my hearing aides, they somehow turn the ringing into a soft 'white noise' rather than amplifying the ringing.

If you don't have hearing aides, maybe some of those 'sporting goods' hearing devices might perform similarly?

Another that's had it for years.  Honestly don't know how long.  At least 25 years and maybe 30.  Remember going to doc for it once at the beginning to ask what the noise was.

After awhile got used to it being there and almost never notice anymore.  Unless, that is, some dipstick brings it up and makes me realize the singing is still there!  Thanks a lot :huepfenlol2: !

Remember reading a story about William Shatner and his having it.  This was many years ago also.  The ringing/singing drove him so batty for awhile he contemplated suicide.  Or at least so went the story from the celebrity's agent seeking good press for him.

You'll get used to the noise.  Don't sweat it.

I too enjoy the constant ringing in both ears. Didn't know I had it until one day the ringing stopped. What is going on I thought, silence. Man it was great until the ringing started back about 10 mins. later. That was about 7 years ago. Went and had my hearing tested and found out I had 60% hearing loss in the left ear and 40% in the right. No cure so I learned to live with it. When in a crowd or noisy area all I hear is background noise, hard to hear a conversation. Hearing aids are in the future ( not in a big rush ) but they won't stop the ringing.

Wouldn't know what to do without it, just part of my life for some 30 years.  Too many early years of shooting handguns, rifles & shotguns before anyone was worring about ear protection.

However I have found a cure, may not be acceptable to everyone.  Death Valley, we were in DV a few years ago for several days, all the day were at least 100' below sea level.  A 180' BLS was a great place to be and at Bad Water, 280' BSE was just perfect!!  & for the 1st time in longer than I can remember I had no ringing in my ears for a full 3 days.  It was like an out of body experience!

But, then there is the 120*, 130* heat.  Although after living in Phoenix for the last 2 1/2 years I could probably live there.

That is the only relief I have had in 30 years.

Yes, I'm another sufferer.  I have to have a fan blowing at night for background noise in order to get to sleep.  Usually my first response when my wife starts talking is "what?". I believe it was caused by loud music in the 70's and working around aircraft without using hearing protection.  I'd like to say that I've got used to it but I'd be lying.  There is a product at Walgreens called Lipo Flavonoid that is supposed to work some to help relieve tinnitus for some people. I started using it but never stayed on it long enough to find out if it works.  Says it takes about 3 or 4 months to tell if it's helping out or not.  I'd take a good a$$ whipping if I thought it would help get rid of it.  Sorry, but welcome to the club.

I have had the "room full of crickets" for some years. I have not looked for any treatment but some time ago heard of a product called Teburin. Not sure if it is still available or if it works but did see it promoted for the condition.

From time to time it gets a real kick on that lasts for a few minutes. I have got past the distraction at bedtime and sleep soundly and generally ignore it ... until someone mentions it.

Me too, for some years now.  Caused by wind noise on bikes I suspect.  Mine is just a high-pitched whine/whistle a bit like a noisy valve in an old TV/Radio/Amplifier etc.  Don't notice it until someone mentions it (this thread for example!!!  ;D ) then it drives me crazy for a while again.

Me too and I am 63 and sure it started with listening to loud music with headphones when younger; then shooting without ear protection and now riding motorcycles without ear plugs. Good excuse to not listen to my wife. :)
