SE 255 cam vs SE 259 cam
« on: September 19, 2012, 06:00:39 PM »

Can anyone tell me the numbers differences in these cams and is there a "seat of your pants" difference. Is it worth the money of changing them?

the 255 will have a better low end but will peter out sooner than the 259,its also set for alot lower compression.the 259 is really alittle more of a "hot rod" cam (not a fire breather, but likes more compression, mild porting & set more for mid range power than the 255)if you looking for alittle more power with a 255 equipt bike, throw a little more (10.0-1)
compression at it and go with a WOODS 555

It's only worth it if the result fits your riding style.  Do you ride your bike like a typical bagger, or do you prefer hot rodding and running at higher rpm?  The stock cam is heavily biased toward low end torque, and that's a good thing with a 900 pound touring bike.  The 259 shifts the curves to the right, with less torque down low but more power up top.  It will require changing pistons to bump compression or you will lose even more down low.  So before you start just comparing peak numbers, you need to honestly evaluate your real riding style and decide if you really want to move the power higher up the rpm range.

There are some threads around here concerning the 110 performance upgrade kit that Harley sells.  It comes with the high compression pistons and the SE259E cams.  See if you can locate those threads and read what the folks have to say.  Here's a link to one such thread:   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=68898.0

Just a cam change or are you bumping compression with say 10.5 pistons?

Can not comment on just a cam change but my bike went from stock to 259/10.5/Heavy breather/VH2:1 and you will not lose virtually any torque down low with a jump in compression. Tq and power both head north. Rev range will extend to 6200rpm. It will pull in 6th from 1500rpm a hell of a lot better than stock which felt the motor was going to jump out the frame (not that I ride that way - but it is a good test of a cams flexibility). However 1,2,3 gears will be a bit edgy under 2000rpm.

That "edgy" is a tuning issue. AFRs fixed would calm that.

Again Dewey you are spot on. Had to put the stock pipes and AC back on for a noise test at the local authorities yeaterday and guess what no hint of shunting (but I did raise the idle to 1200rpms). So i might pay some attention to the tune in that area after I install the 2:1 and modify or buy some quiet(er) baffles.

BTW the intake noise with a 259 cam and the standard pipes/ac is pure porn (but performance is down).
