Thanks for the info!  Yeah that 10.4 CR makes me reluctant with the octane necessary to avoid the dreaded pinging :nervous:.  I'm not sure that part can be tuned out. :nixweiss:

Any suggestions for a cam that will do with a lower compression, yet provides significant improvement over the stock 255's?

Set at 10.2 won't kill it, and will actually carry less ccp,(as will 10.4) than the OE 255 school-bus cam, and dump heat much better as well.

Scott,
This is good info. I too am building my motor up in a couple of months.
I already have the SE 10.5 pistons. I haven't decided on the cam yet; either the SE259 or Woods 777. I'm leaning much further to the 777.
I have a Power Vision tuner with Autotune, Dragula 2 into 1 exhaust and replaced the air filter with a K&N drop in unit.
I should just order the install kit for the 777 from FuelMoto and be done with it. It comes with the adjustable push rods, gaskets and bearings kit.
And the thinner head gasket. Are there anymore parts that are 'must have' that I am missing?
That is all I plan to do to the insides.

Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity!

Dragula 2 into 1, S&S 640 EZ start cams pistons (10.8 compression) flywheel and Timken bearing, Vee Twin Racing Stage IV ported heads, K&N air cleaner, Power Vision with WBO2 auto tuner, king tour pak, solo & two up mounts, pass. floor boards, Headwinds spot/turn signal lights, zumo 660 GPS, ssaddlebag guard & pouches, Progress Suspension cartridg

I prefer a little less compression and then the timing can be added or subtracted as needed.
We hear a lot about "optimal" compression, a little short of that is safer and allows for that occasional single spout  fill up when the last guy got 87 or the stations that all they have is 89. It happens!

Your plan is sound and there will not be a big difference between either of those cams.
No need to touch the heads but I suggest a .030 MLS head gasket and a set of Gaterman lifters

"very little pinging" is still not good & will do engine damage

Just finished my build. Didn't pick her up yet because the suspension work is being done tomorrow. Got 105 hp and 120 torque on the Dyno. Did .030 head gasket which gave me 10 to 1 compression, tts mastertune, Fullsac Xpipe "c", Andrews 57 cam, and CFR slipons. I will post they Dyno sheet on Thursday when I get it. Can't wait to ride her. Dave said she's a beast!!

Although, S&S 124"ers/.640 cam, crates, or SSP kits, are set at 10.8 from them.
All depends on the cam being used, and the intended purpose.

i hope you done more than just a .030 head gasket to get 10 to 1 compression.  I done the Tman stage 2 head work done with .060 milled and the .030 head gasket and only have a true 9.9 compression.

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered my parts.
777 Woods cam and lifters; .030 head gasket; Fuelmoto adjustable push rods and their cam install kit. I should have these next week. I already bought the SE 10.5:1 pistons.
I'll post all the good details when I do the install in a while. It could be a couple of months before I do the work though.
