Ed,
Just getting caught up on this thread in my opinion there is no way I would consider this whining. Once you set the ground rules of what you expect and how you want your bike to be treated either they can conform to your standards or tell you to take your business somewhere else. Either way you as the customer in the end will be happy.
I constantly remind the service manager and techs that work on my scooter that I'm anal so they don't forget it. Most (all) of the time I bring my bike in for service it's clean, and the majority of the time (depending on what's getting done) I don't have them wash it. The few times I do are to get the oil from around the frame and motor from major service, but I still bring it home and detail it afterwards. On numerous occasions the wash guys will ask me why I've even had them wash the bike, because it was cleaner before they started. My reply is what I mentioned before, just to get some of the oil off before riding it home, and having it spread all over the bike.
Hopefully your attention to detail and bringing your concerns back to the Service Manager/General Manager and ultimately to the technician will have them be more concerned/careful of how they treat your scooter.
