Zumo MUST be wired externally?
« on: October 02, 2012, 03:53:13 AM »

Getting ready to transfer my 660 to a '13 FLHRSE5. Looking at the H-D handlebar mount, the instructions are pretty adamant that the mount MUST be wired externally to the bars. That seems odd, considering several CVO Road Glides had the same mount, wired internally from the factory. Anyone have any insight into this? Seems a shame to have a wire hanging off those nice clean bars.

I was wondering the same thing.  Maybe because of the audio cable since you'd need to remove one end and splice it back together which can be challenging.  If you only want power, then internal wiring should be pretty easy.

I do not know if your bike has a hole drilled in the center of the bars for the wires to pass into the cowling or not. You would have to drill a hole there and on the end where the cable from the GPS enters the bars. Even with a pair of bars that have the holes running the cable inside is a real pain without damaging them. It can be done but you need to use extream caution when pulling the cable thru the bars.

The cable from the 660/665 cradle (which is not removable like the 550 cradle) has a HUGE junction where the power cables and audio cables merge together.  This portion of the plug is too big to fit through the bars.  You could cut the cable, and splice it back together, but I don't see another way around it.

That makes sense. How did they do it with the FLTRUSE, then, I wonder? Maybe Garmin supplied the cradle to the MoCo with the cable seperate and it was assembled at the factory?

The cable will go through the bars. I have replaced the mount\wiring harness on a few CVO's. you have to be very careful when pulling the cable through to insure you do not over stress the cables. I do not know if the inside diam of the bars on a CVO is larger then the inside diam on your bars.

Do not cut the cable you would have to be very good at splicing a lot of very small wires.

They say that to cover their ass. You will need to drill a hole in your bars where the mount is.  Here is me covering my ass....If you drill a whole in the bars you need to re chrome them to prevent that hole rusting and possibly rusting outwards.  I have done this on my legend air ride switch that mounts on the switch housing clamp.  They say to run external, but it is ugly and I run all wires even clutch and brake through bars.  I re chrome bars so it doesn't rust at the hole.  It has been easier for me over the years since I do it all the same time I put bigger bars on.

Wired it internally on my 09 CVO roadglide with out drilling the bars, did it again on my 12 CVO roadglide with out drilling the bars or cutting the cable.

Now, when I switched to 14" PYO monkey bars, I let the dealer do that due to all new cables for clutch, brakes and wring.  They said the GPS was a pain, had to take the harnes for the cradle apart at the cradle and pull the wires in backwards.

It works and looks good.

I will be using the same mount, chrome for my 13 CVO king, and doing the wires internally and back to the bag so it will run though the sound system.

Just helped a friend swap out stock bars for WO515s on his '11 RUSE.  Got the wires for the Road Tech 660 into the new bars internally with no problem at all.  We did have to remove the pins from the power connector.  That connector is too large to fit through the openings.

I removed the wires from the mount itself. Open the mount, (watch for spring) , remove staple and 'glue'....and then it can be pulled in from the center of the bars to the grip end.
