I was asked by one of your members to post some insight on this thread concerning the proper lubricants for the new 6 speed tranny.  I am a forum oil sponsor from the v-twinforum.com site and have been in the oil business for over 25 years, as well as having an extensive background in the aviation maintenance field.  I have also been riding motorcycles for over 40 years.  With all this said I am not saying I am an expert, but I have gained a lot of good logical mechanical experience over the years.

Now as far as the subject goes it is my understanding that the first and fifth gear is a straight cut gear and the other gears are all helical cut gears in the new six speed tranny.  If this is true then this is the reason that some bikers have complained about a whin or a noise when in fifth gear.  Straight cut gears make noise and that is one reason tranny engineers have designed gear boxes using the helical cut gears instead of straight cut because they are quieter.   If my understanding is correct due to this design this is why gearlubes are not needed in this tranny.  Straight cut and helical gears do not need lubricants that have extreme pressure additives like gearlubes pocess.  They are protected very well with a 20w 50 or Harleys Formula+, which is a simple straight 50 weight oil with some anti-wear additives in it.  Now in my personal and professional opinion you can still run a gearlube in these tranny's, but if you are going to operate your bike in colder weather make sure you use a syntheitc gearlube.

So long as you use an oil which meets or exceeds the standards and designations called for in the manual, Harley-Davidson cannot void your warranty, under the Magnusson-Moss Act (MMA). The relevant text of the MMA reads:

"(c) No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written, or implied,
warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product,
any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge
under the terms of warranty) which is identified by brand, trade, or corporate name;
except that the prohibition of this subsection may be waived by the Commission
if -- (1) the warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will
function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection
with the warranted product, and (2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in
the public interest." (42 U.S.C. 2302(C))

Essentially, the MMA specifically prevents manufacturers of OEM vehicles from requiring a consumer to use an OEM part, or fluid, in order to maintain warranty coverage unless that part or fluid is provide FREE OF CHARGE. (Ever get any free oil from Harley? I never did...) The law is designed to prevent manufacturers from by holding customers hostage by charging obscene prices for parts or fluids which are otherwise commonly available from the aftermarket, assuming a set of minimum standard are met. The key here is that Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc. lubricants meet or exceeds the minimum standars set by the OEM manufacturer. Seems there was a thread on oil comparisons amongst the various brands.

My dealer showed me a tech bulletin from Harley telling them to get the syn 3 out and put 60-70 in.
My 07 now is quiet and runs great. I put Amsoil in the motor Rinehart exhaust and a cam in and all problems went away.

Good thing I'm running a 5 speed.  I run Bel-Ray 85W140 Hypoid Gear Oil.  Wonder if their directive applies to the aftermarket 6 speed?

I have not heard of this new service bulletin as of yet. I am going to check today. If I can get a hold of it I will scan and post.

I never run syn 3. It seems to thin down very fast in the heat and it STINKS. I run either Amsoil or Redline. In the tranny it is the same but a heavy oil. Redline shockproof or Amsoil 75/90

I have had good luck with both

Be Safe

Talked to my dealer about this issue and SB, and got the "deer in the headlights look".  They didn't know anything about it.
