Metal sound in engine while ridding
« on: October 13, 2012, 09:01:40 AM »

Recently I'm having some issue in my 2012 cvo SG, has only 8000 Km, I noticed a metal irritating  sound which I hear while ridding. I thought in the begining that it is the suspensions, but when I took it to the dealer, they have opened the engine and told me that there is 4 alike pieces that has a default and this what cause the sound. They have told me that they are the pieces which has to do with the oil passing to the engine.
Well, they said it is not that big problem but it was kind of sad seeing a 2012 cvo engine pulled a part. Also, it's weird that 4 pieces has the same default. I can understand one or two but 4,,, it's strange. I don't think that HD didn't noticed that specially if the engine was assembled by hand not machines. So, I don't know,,, either HD did not know what are they doing when making this bike for my bad luck, or the technician in our dealer ship is mistaken when diagnosed the problem.

See if you can get the exact name of the parts they claim are defective.  I'm trying to think of four identical parts that might cause your noise, and the ones that come to mind are the lifters.  If they are in fact talking about the lifters, it's unlikely they all failed but in many cases it's easier for the technician to just replace the entire set rather than take the time to determine which one is bad.

I got a metal chirp, ping, clang or what ever you want to call it coming from my primary. I also thought it was coming from the engine but it indeed is the primary under more investigating. It does it under load as soon as you hit the gas and thats it. I also can work the clutch and give it a little gas at a red light to get it to do it as well. Kinda waiting for the chain to come flying through the cases before the dealer will do anything about it. More of a piss off more than anything.

Yep.  GM and Ford has had some lifter issues the past few years also.  Wonder if they all have the same manufacture.

ck the compensator for wear and if it is tight...seen a few where the bolt seems too long and the comp parts are actually rattling and will shoe excessive wear

They pulled the CYLINDERS off because of a defective LIFTER? Good GRIEF! Lifters are the FIRST and easiest things to check! You need a more competent dealer... that's a 2 to 3 hour job at most, and the cam chest doesn't even need to come off - much less the cylinders!

A competent shop would have checked the lifters FIRST - especially knowing the failure rates of H-D lifters - without tearing the whole engine apart like that. That's really pathetic...

Well, they have told me that they didn't know where the sound comes from that why they had to take the part step by step till they found the defect.
I guess they took out the lifter at the end, after they took the whole engine off.

Sorry, but if that's the way they went about diagnosing a lifter problem... then they are idiots. Sounds to me like they wanted to keep their techs busy on the MoCo's dime. There's just no excuse for taking the route they did... a lifter issue is a very easy thing to check out.

But I'm glad you got your problem fixed. I just hope the fools reassembled your engine correctly.

Well, have another question
Is there any problems that I might have in the future due to the taking the engine apart like that and remount it again!!!
Any problem of loosing compression or leakage of oil !!!!!

There COULD be lots of things... but there SHOULDN'T be... provided they put your engine back together correctly and torque everything correctly. Torquing the cylinder head bolts correctly to spec would be my primary concern. Screw that up and lots of bad things can happen - but it's simple to do correctly. But again... the fact that they pulled the cylinders to find a simple lifter problem throws their basic competency into serious doubt in my view...

Just ride it like you stole it.....Still under warranty yet? Then run the chit out of it. You will be fine if its a good dealership. Seen many of them rebuilt and better than new!!

Just seen that your from France...........Not sure about the dealers over there.....
