Former Goldwing owners
« on: October 16, 2012, 08:16:38 PM »

Well, I have come to the point of "considering" going back to HD (used to own a 2005 SEEG) and would like some input from those of Goldwing (non Wingers can input as well) persuasion with some questions:

Just got back from Arkansas and straightening out some of their curves; Push Mountain and the Pig Trail to be specific.   ;D ;D ;D  I truly enjoy pushing the envelope and was wondering how much less, if any, you have to cut back being aggressive in the twisties, specifically with an Ultra or Road Glide?  Any regrets after changing over?

Have you pulled a trailer i.e. a Bushtec to carry momma's extra,,,,,shoes and stuff; and if so any drawbacks?

I would be looking at 2009 or later in order to have ABS brakes.  Any recurrent "problems" in the RG or UC?

Finally does the RG Classic handle similar to the Wing with the fixed fairing?

Feel free to offer any input or contact by PM.

Thanks

My SEUC has 65K.  I may or may not have pulled a trailer for 10K or more.

Bring your 'Wing and follow me through the mountains.  Let me know if it's quick enough for you.  I think you'll be surprised.

Ive owned a 1000, 1100, 1200, and 1800 GW.

I traded my 1800 for an 09 FLHT, then traded for an 06 SEUC.

Its my belief that the 1800 GW is the best touring bike available, hands down.  Comfort, power, features, ride, and value are unbeatable.

I went to a Harley touring bike because it is far better balanced and much easier to maneuver in town, which is 70-80% of my riding.  It is also an excellent touring bike, but IMO not as good as the GW.

The only real complaint I have about my SEUC is the heat the engine puts out on a hot day at idle.

If I ever go to a trike it will be a GW.  Hopefully that is still many years away.

If I were riding the twisties, which I dont unless its along my way, I would look at a bike made for the twisties.  Asking a touring bike to perform on the twisties is like asking a B-52 to dogfight a MIG-29.

Only allowed 1 motorcycle.  ::)  With that, the 1800 does really well and being from North Texas I have to travel at least 4 hours to find some good curvy roads.  I also do mostly highway with some city driving and several escorts per year.

I have heard from HD riders that the RG is the best maneuvering of the two.  :sauer007:  I assume that the RGC is set up with tour pack, CB and intercom system.

Speaking from experience of owning both a Bat wing and a Shark nose I feel the RG handles better.  I am sorry to say you know what happens when you assume.  The RGC does not have the tour pack or the CB-intercom system. The Road Glide Ultra Screaming Eagle is the only RG CVO that does. It was only produced on 2011. Older RG CVO's have the items added. 2011 was the only year that had all the add ons.

I put 100k miles on my GL1800 in the 4-5 years I had it. Moved to a dual sport to get off the beaten path a little. Fell in love with the 09 yellow SERG and bought it having never even sat on a HD. I love the bike, but they aren't the same. Like comparing a muscle car to a Caddy... they each have their high points and are good for what they are, but they will never be the same. (OK, the can be close to being the same... which is why when I get home from this deployment I'm buying a Caddy CTS-V; 556 HP!!)

If I had no limits to my stable size, I'd have another GL1800... I loved riding that bike hard, fast, and long. It is an amazing touring bike that I rode for 20 hours a day for 10 days straight and didn't mind getting on it the next morning. I don't suspect I'd feel the same about my SERG.

The SERG is a beast and I also enjoy riding it; and as far as looks go, I don't think there's anyone who'd say a Wing can come close in that category.

You've got the advantage of having been on both bikes, so you've got a pretty good idea of the difference. From what I hear, the frame change on the touring bikes in '09 made a huge difference in how they feel, and the 120 is a strong motor, but it doesn't have the kick of the 1800. You're also going to have to drop a good chunk of change to equip a RG to have all the amenities of the Wing.

Coming off the wing, I didn't have any problems with the fixed fairing; as far as handling, I was far more comfortable pushing it in the twisties on my wing than I am on my SERG, but then my riding style has changed in recent years. I am sad to admit my poor SERG only has 9k miles on it. Hopefully I'll find time to change that next year when I get home.

It's a tough choice, but there's something drawing you back to the HD. If you're in a position to unload your wing and pick up a good deal on a used HD, go for it! But if you've got your wing dialed in and really enjoy riding it, I'd give a second thought to dumping it and having to get another bike dialed in.

Regarding the Ultra and the Road-Glide comparison.  They both use the same frame and wheelbase, the handling difference comes into play because with the RG you are not having to move the fairing.  Really not a problem on the road since the moves are small by comparison.

One thing that you may want to consider since you are from Texas is that since the Road Glide has a fixed fairing fairing you can not direct near as much air onto yourself as you can with the batwing.  Such as with freedom-wings or similar product.  That makes a big difference (least to me) during the summer months.

The RG is slightly more stable on the expressway because of the fixed fairing.

Apples and oranges.....even a bananna. :bananarock:

Some know that I had a Goldwing at one time.  But have rode Harleys all my life.  Many will tell you I'm always out front, doesn't matter what I ride or where I'm ridin it. :P

That hasn't changed with the new super duty and 5th wheel. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

That yellow bike you have is what got me thinking about the HD again.  NO ONE does paint like HD.  I may get to the twisties once a year, but do enjoy them.  The wing was the one that I could have fun on that the wife enjoyed more for her comfort.  Unfortunately, due to health reasons, she can't ride as much and the HD did bring me more smiles. (although gas stops take much longer with strangers conversing about the ride)

Did you notice any difference in your older CVO's compared to your 2010?

First CVO.  I had a '07 and '08 Ultra before that.

The CVO has a lot more in the power department.  This came to a bright light when I got my '08 back for a loaner when my was in for 50K service.

The '10 has a slightly harsher ride, but handles much better, with very little to no rear steer.  I always felt like the chassis was being upset when I ground hard parts on the earlier bikes while riding aggressively.  Doesn't feel like that on the '10.  I can nice controlled grind at limit of lean when running full-tilt-boogie.

Last weekend I chased a Buell Ulysses Police model east on US 60 from Buena Vista to Blue Ridge Parkway.  Much to my friends surprise, I was with him all the way.  Also shocked a group of BMW riders about a month ago heading up US250 from McDowell.  Got to the first tight turn and almost ended up with the trailing Beemer as a fairing ornament.

Warranty-wise, I have had a few issues, but they were all addressed in a reasonable time and manner.  I don't think the GW is without issues either.

My CVO is a BLAST to ride, and has never left me stranded.  Too expensive, but I'd buy another one.  Probably will when I can afford it  :D

YMMV

Nice.  We should ride together sometime.  IMO, asking a touring bike to perform in the twisties (to quote a previous post) is as more about the rider than the machine.  Slow riders will ride sportbikes ...... slowly.
