Capacities ?
« on: October 27, 2012, 05:45:04 PM »

My head is swimming with numbers.

Is this correct?

06 FLHTCUSE

Engine oil  4 qts
Primary oil  32 oz
6 speed tranny  1 qt

13 FLHRSE5

Engine oil 4 qts
Primary oil  38 oz
6 speed tranny 1 qt

How much oil does the cooler hold?  Does Harley recommend that oil be drained, or is it so little that it isnt an issue.

I need to do the 10k maintence on my 06 and the 1k on the misses 13, so I want to make sure I get these capacities right.

Im getting old and am easily confused.

Engine full capacity change is four quarts.  In field practice 3.5 is common though.  Leaving it a half quart low on a cold engine dipstick helps eliminate some common blowby.

Primary measure is always something of an approximation.  Fill it to the bottom of the clutch basket.

Tranny measure works out close.  But it does have a dipstick.  So it's something you can watch as it gets full.

Your close but according to my manual the capacity for the 06 5 speed was 20-24 0z well under a quart.

bmcgc, regarding the primary capacity.( I have an 09 so yours may be different.) Since some of my concrete around the house has a decent tilt to it I part my bike so it is really leaning towards downhill where the primary drain plug is. You will get a lot more fluid out this way then if you do it on a level surface. Then fill it as per specs in the service manual. I have gotten as much as 45 ounces using this technique. It was not over filled, but it won't completely drain on a level surface. In my 09 service manual  it sayes if you pull off the primary cover it will take about 45 ounces to fill it. On a level surface it only calls for 38 ounces. This info is in chapter 1 page 7 of my 09 service manual. CAHDBIKER

My 06 has a 6 speed.  Im guessing it is an 07-08 version because the case is not drilled for the crossover pipe hanger.

Nope.  The transmissions aren't interchangeable.  That's either the six speed gear set installed in the five speed case or the complete replacement SE six speed.  It's the same thing in the end so makes no difference.  But it's still the five speed case so far as volumes are concerned.  Easiest to just use the dipstick when you think you're getting close.

Thanks Twolane.

The side cover says "Screaming Eagle".

Would you guess its the gearset or the replacement transmission?

Either way, are gears 1-5 the same ratio as the orginial 5-speed?

1-5 are the same.  No difference whether it was a complete tranny that was changed out or the gears within the existing case.  Only one obvious way to tell too.

Check the partial VIN on the top of the transmission case to see if it matches the partial VIN on the engine.  If so it's the case that came with the bike.  I've seen a couple of the complete transmissions that didn't have a number at all and one that had some service replacement number stamped in.

I didnt see any numbers on top of the case.

If there would be in the location marked by the red circle in this pic.  If no number someone pulled the five speed and replaced it with the complete SE six speed rather than putting a gear set in the bike's original case.

It has a number, it does not match the vin at all.

I would guess the tranny was swapped.  All the fastners look like they have been torqued on.  I bought the bike with 5,000 miles on it.  I dont see any evidence of other fastners being removed.

It's a VIN derivative.  Just to be sure compare it against the numbers on the left side of the engine below the cylinders rather than the VIN itself.

Doesn't make any difference.  Matter of curiosity only.  But at least you'll know.

The numbers on the tranny case are random. They do not follow the VIN number. Only the engine case number uses the truncated VIN.

I'll be damned.  Never actually compared them and always just assumed they were a VIN derivative like the automotive world stamps.

Ok, very sorry for the misinformation guys. Entirely my bad.  Thanks Jim.
