Just wanting to get some opinions on how long you should subject your air cooled motor to stting in stop and go traffic before you bail to the emergency lane or get off the freeway completely, Thanks

What's the ambient air temp, humidity and barametric pressure? :nixweiss:

More than a minute or two is to long in my opinion.....besides, lane splitting is safer. :2vrolijk_21:

When I hear the back cylinder cut out I start getting nervous. I know they're designed to do it, but the last time I got caught and it kicked out I just shut it off. I wondered then which was worse starting and stopping or letting it run on 1 cylinder.

Lane splitting isnt legal here... so that isnt a reasonable option...

However, we do have a pretty comprehensive traffic camera system that allows you to watch before departing for / from wherever you are. On the occasions I get caught in traffic, I try to keep the bike positioned in the lane to allow the most airflow across the cylinders. This helps somewhat in keeping the ETMS from activating....

Once it does activate I start looking for an escape route.. or simply an overpass... (shade)

even with our comparatively moderate climate (300 ft, temp rarely over 80 °F) almost everytime I ride through the city the EITMS engages after some time. No way to shut off the engine - I would never get anywhere if I did. If the engine gets into real danger the temp sensor would do so I was told. Never heard of even a 110 to have been cooked to death though.

But I would not let the bike sit at idle for longer than lets say 10 min - already for my personal comfort.

It's never good for these bikes.  I got stuck on I 95 coming back from Daytona.   I saw that there was an upcoming exit about a mile away,,  I ended upon the right shoulder and got off then waited.  Rather than sitting in that, I took the long way around till the next entrance. But at least I was moving.  :nixweiss:

I remember sitting for around 40 minutes while on a day ride on the Pala GTG. Finally a few of us just went down the bicycle lane for several miles to get to the freeway. That had to be very hard on everyones motor.

Just thought I'd mention that the real purpose of the EITMS is not the protection of the engine from the effects of heat, but is in fact aimed at improving rider comfort.  Think about it.  If they wanted to protect the entire engine, why would they only shut down the rear cylinder and leave the front cylinder running full time?  A system meant to protect the engine would more likely be set up to alternate firing between the two cylinders.

One thing the EITMS will do, besides improving the comfort level of your upper legs and other delicate parts, is give you an indication of the actual engine temperature, kind of like an idiot light.  Unless something has changed and I missed it, the system on the late model bikes kicks in below 290°F as measured at the front cylinder head temp sensor.  That is significantly lower than the temps the old systems used back when they just lowered idle speeds and modified timing and fuel to cool things down.  So I wouldn't panic if the EITMS shuts down the rear cylinder.  But I would take it as a warning that you need to start thinking about alternative routes or perhaps pulling over for a pit stop if possible.

Even with a tune/intake & exhaust upgrade,  when the temps are above 80-85°, it's amazing how quickly the EITMS will kick in. 2-3 good redlights and it's in the Briggs & Straton mode. I have the fairing mounted oil temp gauge and you can almost watch it move.  I've always been shoked at the difference between my 09 and the 00FXSTS.
