Suggestions for Cameras w/wifi and can post to Facebook
« on: November 16, 2012, 10:26:39 PM »

With the SLRs and DLSRs this isn't a product family I'm familiar with.  My sis wants something though.  Christmas is coming soon so I'm hoping some of you can save me some homework.

She's not a shooter.  So high end isn't a requirement.  Suggestions, please, to meet these specs if there's something out there to do it.

Preferably not throw-away AA or AAA.  Something that can recharge in the camera.

Shoots video.  Preferably can shoot a still while shooting the video.  This isn't an absolute though.  Two things at once isn't her best thing.

WiFi enabled so she can post to Facebook from the camera (I may have to look at Facebook this century).

Suggestions please.

Thanks,
Harold

Geez, Don...that's a bit of a tough one.  How concerned is she about quality of images?  If only going to post to Facebook, that's one thing, but you can do that with a smartphone with something over 5MP.  A real camera...that's a different ballpark...IMO.

Not that concerned about superb image quality.  I'm not sure why she's wanting to do it with something other than her iPhone either.  But she's decided she does.  She's got a Nikon DSLR and a few lenses I set her up with two or three years ago.  Always shoots in automatic....  But she uses it.

My guess is she's wanting to approximate what is in her mind a "good picture" and be able to shoot video without having to switch anything.  The Facebook thing is her big deal though.

I found a Nikon that was based on the Android operating system.  WiFi enabled and downloaded apps.  It could go directly to Facebook or most anythign else with an app available.  But it used an older Android OS that I'm not a fan of.  So even though the camera is relatively new the software turned me off.

Then found a Samsung model with a similar skill set.  But it's a bit complicated for her regular use.  So still looking.  Hopefully someone else will know of something.  I'm too many beers in to the evening to do competent research.

Take a look at this one.

Potential.  You have experience with that one Skillet?

As I read it to get pics to social media sites you have to wifi link to a phone or upload to a Canon service than shift them to a social media site.  Either is potentially a more complicated option than I'd like to find.  So wondering just how many steps are involved in getting from camera to Facebook.

Sorry I don't Don. Just did a quick search and found it. I am a Canon fan but no experience with it.

Wait, we may have a winner.  Got this link in PM.  Looks like it's what she's looking for.  Reviews and specs suggest easy to use.  Decent (enough) image quality.

Not much zoom capability.  But will have to look at this Samsung family more.

Me too (Canon).  But the social media stuff and camera attendant features aren't my playground.  Homework sucks....  :huepfenlol2:

Ding ding ding.  Think we have a winner.  Better zoom.  Looks like easy access to the social media sites.  Not sure what it uses for batteries but, hey, don't really care that much.  Does everything she'll think is important for $130.  Sweet...

I have a Canon 7D that will take me a lifetime to learn all the functions but not a every day camera. I use a Nikon AW100 for a great pocket camera suggested by Kraut.

Hope you find something that will work for her. Have another drink. :drink:

Amen to that brother :drink: .

Just looked it up more and found that little Samsung got some decent reviews.  A bit noisy in some areas she'll never see.  So that's ok.  Uses an onboard lithium battery so no AAs to throw away repeatedly.  The WiFi and its links to PC or TV are pretty simple.  Completely good enough for my sister's needs and limited desire to master.  Shoots video too.  She'll be happy.  Snooped a little farther and found a link for the camera with an 8 gig card and a little bag for $150 shipped.  Scratch one Christmas present :2vrolijk_21: .
