Help deciding on height of replacement screen.
« on: November 29, 2012, 01:26:09 AM »

Hi there

I've decided to replace the stock windshield on my Street Glide because of the buffetting I'm copping.

I'm 5'9" with a 30" inseam and sitting on the bike as comfortably in an assumed riding position the stock screen (which measures a fraction under 6 1/2") sits around the tip of my nose. I can see over it just fine when I'm riding.

I'm pretty sold on the Freedom Shields, but not sure if I should go slightly shorter at 6" or slightly higher at 7"??

John at Freedom has been an awesome help but feedback from other members on this forum is always appreciated. I'll decide after some replies.

Cheers

Hey,
I am 5'10". I have a 8 inch Freedom shield and can see over it great. My seat is also cut down some. As you know the Freedom shield has a re-curve at the top and it kinda throws the air up and over. I would at least get the 7", maybe even the 8. John has them on sale I think, so you may can afford both. I really like the 8 inch, actually just ordered a 9 inch from him for colder weather riding.
Measure with the stock shield and add a inch or even 2 with cardboard and see if you can see over it.
 Good luck.

Had the same HD shield on my SG at 6 1/2".  I'm 5'6 and had no issues with sitting at riding position and seeing all I needed to over that.  I had the opportunity to try the Freedom shield as another of our members sold their 7" dark tint.  If I had ordered one, it would have been the 7" but in the light tint.  However, this was a great deal and a chance to try out the Freedom unit.  My only reason for looking was getting the wind a bit higher for my BSR.  With it being 1/2" taller and the re-curve, The Freedom shield does cut into my field of vision a bit more BUT the optics through the shield are amazing so when/if I do look through it, there is no distortion as with the HD one I removed.  In addition, the "flip" at the top of the Freedom unit put the brunt of the wind 6-8" higher off me which really helped out the BSR.
One more thing that I wasn't expecting.  The stock HD shield reflected my CVO LED tank light and it was a distraction at night....I would actually tape a piece of cardboard over the CVO tank badge if I was out extended periods after dark.  With the Freedom shield and the re-curve, the light reflection is gone.
They make a great product.  When you decide, make sure to post a pic here.  Good luck with your decision

Same height as you with a 7" LRS flip up. Just high enough without blocking my vision.

looks like we have the same bike and same frame (5'9"m 30").  I tried a number of shields before landing on Freedom.  I now have an 8" that works very well.  I also have a Corbin Solo which actually raised me a little from stock.  The top of the shield is mount high, ideal is at the nose.  so I have a little more than an inch to play with.  I just ordered a 9" from John at Freedom, dark tint.  if it is a little to high I will go back to the 8.  i am very comfortable recommending the 8" to you.  I also added the fairing deflectors and the triple tree deflector as well.  Good luck.

I've got the same set up.  I'm about 5'10", and the Freedom 9" w/ dark tint is perfect for me.  Occasionally, at night I wish it had the medium tint, especially when I'm on windy roads or splitting lanes (when I need to see closer objects near the ground).  My next shield will be the 8" medium tint, to compare.

I was surprised at the amount of buffeting on the stock bike.  I ended up getting the fork baffle PN 85820-79TC, and the adjustable fairing deflectors PN 58156-08A.  The buffeting is mostly gone now.

Good luck with your search!

Thought I would post a couple pics of the 7" freedom shield I mention in a earlier post on this thread to show the height and how it looks.  First one is from the front.

And the second from the side to show the re-curve and height.  Hope these help.

Yeah I got the same problem with the dark tint. I love it most of the time.
I just ordered a light tint from John. It arrived Monday. I think it will be a good winter shield, maybe all year.

If the windshield is the same level as your nose, I'd try these two suggestions first.  The adjustable fairing deflectors are a miracle product in my book!

If it's nose height, that's about perfect for seeing over the top.  If you get the same height in a recurve shield of whatever brand, it's like adding 2" to the height.  So in your case, I would not go taller than a 7" recurve.

I know some people don't mind looking through a shield, but every safety article you read on the subject says not to do it...look over.

I'm 5'9" with a 32 inseam and bought the 7" freedom for my Street Glide.  I loved it except for the fact in turns and if I didn't sit up tall I found myself looking through the shield instead of over it.  I since sold the 7" and am getting the 6".  Bottom line the 7" was just half and inch too tall.  Hope this helps.
