Motor Swap - Regrets?
« on: December 19, 2012, 07:00:24 PM »

I have seen a few CVO bikes with paint changes that have been received into the CVO comunity negatively and I have to say I agree. What about if someone where to drop in a S&S 124 motor? Would that hurt the resale value of my bike down the road or help it? I haveseen a post or two about a Jims 131 being swapped out and I recall the CVO comunity accepted it.
What do you think the selling price of a good running 110 would be worth? Runs 100 hp on Dyno (fullsack& V&H high outputs) but has never been tuned by TTS professional. Dewey ProStreet Heads, Woods Cams and Lifters? I think there is alot of power hiding in there. Or should I part it out for a better return?    :nixweiss:

I wanted this topic in the Road Glide section but it got moved to this section. Sorry for the duplication of topic in Twin Cam.

Because I want to pole opinions of others who are wiser than me. And possibly have more experience with this than me. To me it is a big decision and I value the advise of others, it helps me make a more enlightened decision.

Your bike is worth whatever the market will bear at any givin time.....no matter what's been done to it.r...you always tend to lose on accessories and such....just the nature of resale....

Apparently not wiser than you as you have not one but two CVO bikes but I will give you an opinion, stick with what you have and keep the resale value, I do believe a 124 would lower the value, if you want a stronger motor build a nice 120 on your cases with the matching vin. Don can work your heads to whatever you deem necessary and no one will have to know about those extra 10 cubes.
Just noticed your "winter in the midwest sucks" below your avatar, about to suck a lot more here in West Central WI with 14-18 inches of new snow on the way

well depends. the purest will look down on any mods, engine, foot pegs, anything that wasn't factoy. To me engine mods if done right and you have the supporting paperwork, build sheet, Dyno graph, shop bill etc. Would not lower the price in my book. A well thought out engine build adds value to a motorhead like me. anyway any one that has done any research on the 110in knows that half of them don't last. The last two bikes i sold the deciding factor was the paperwork, build sheets, shop bill on the engine builds. granted you won't get all you investment out of it but somes better than nothing.

I would pay a little more for a bone stock bike vs one that has had mods.
I do my own mods and never assume to make any money when I sell..........but..........I don't sell very often!

Once again I feel the need to burst a bubble and remind folks these bikes are not real customs, they are not real collector bikes, and considering the huge increase in production volume over the years they are really not all that special anymore.  The CVO is basically an option package not unlike what you find in the auto industry.  It doesn't magically make the bike a collector item or somehow immune from the normal depreciation that afflicts the lesser models.

Do what you want and don't worry about it.  If you really think swapping out the engine would hurt the value, then stick the stock engine in the crate the new engine came in and store it.  If you want to sell the bike, stick the stocker back in the frame.

btw, there are several members on the site who have removed the stock engine and replaced it with offerings from JIM'S or the SE120R.  Some have been happy with the results, but many of the JIM'S folks not so much.  These days JIM'S has about the same reputation for quality and customer service that the MoCo has, which is lousy and lousy.  I'm not personally aware of anyone swapping in an S&S, probably because it has only been very recently that S&S offered a Twin Cam style engine that would work in current frames.

I wouldn't worry about the resale value. Put whatever engine you want in it.I have a Jim's 131, I wouldn't buy a Jim's again. I would be interested in the 120Rthough. I do think if I had it to do over again, I'd tone it down a bit with cams or something. My 131 ain't happy unless it's at WOT.

If you decide to drop a different engine in it, do as grc says and stick the stock engine back in the new crate and keep it. If you ever sell the bike, it'd probably bring more with the stock engne than with a Jim's or the 120R in it.

Just my 02.

Temper what the builder is suggesting with what you want to do.  I didn't like the thought of having an extra motor laying around or having non-stock cases.  I am building my 110 and leaving it a 110.  I think it's been proven that that's probably not the most economical way of making power, but I'm weird in that if it says "110" on it, I want it to be a 110. LOL  When it's done, will it be worth more, or less, than a stock bike or a 124, who knows?  But I'm doing to the bike what I want and that's really all that matters.

This is simple.
Mostly about people and business decisions not technical aspects.
All good news from my view..

You have the bike at Dragos.
Frank is a very sharp dude and what he does and says works and is not costly compared to the market, simple.
You are polling for opinions on a forum and really all you need to do is set your horsepower and reliability expectation and let Frank drive.
He presents you with options and you decide, simple.
If you want a rock solid 124" motor buy the S&S and if you have hopes of selling the bike keep your motor and swap it back in, simple and cost effective. On the resale market the new motor will be neutral in value for the most part but as a part on it's own would still carry 50% resale value. The used 110 is not going to bring much.

Build options range from a little messing with the 110 (120hp easy), a 113" upgrade (125hp), 120R (130hp) or the 124"(135hp). Once again Frank can lay it out for you and save a lot of vacillating plus make his job a lot easier. The horsepower numbers I cite cost more as you move up the line of course plus these are in street trim, reliable configuration, and relatively conservative.

State the horsepower, get the quote, decide, he implements the changes, you pay and ride on happy, simple.
Trust him, you won't be sorry.

Hehehe ... When it's all said and done and we've run 'em off at RibFest, I might damn well wished I'd have consulted with you, Ken! :)

Sorry I forgot the rules.....

Should have said...... My 110 SERK is still stock and the Stealer already told me that if I changed the engine out he would not be able to give me anything like the value. I guess people are just scared of buying something that has been tinkered with.

......then I should have asked the question about ribfest!!!!

Been away too long.
