Oil Fan Install
« on: January 05, 2013, 05:59:06 PM »

I decided to buy the BigSky fan for the oil cooler.  I know there is a split about whether they provide anymore cooling power than without one, but I just can't help but think they will make a difference in stop and go traffic.  Anyway...I went ahead and took some photos while I was installing them.  Hopefully this may help someone decide whether they want to go ahead and purchase this or not.  My opinion after the install is that they do pull alot of air through the cooler.  Not sure how I will verify any benefit yet this summer, but my intial thought is it will be beneficial in stop and go traffic.

The first pic is of the fans and hardware to install.

This third pic is of the bottom of the oil cooler mounting bracket.  These three nuts will have to be removed.  This allows the oil cooler and chrome cover to be removed from the bracket.

The fourth and fifth pics are of how dirty the mount and bottom rows of the oil cooler was.  If anything...this allowed me to clean them.  I just sprayed brake cleaner on the oil cooler from the back side and then used the air compressor to blow it out.  A lot of rags later and it was pretty clean.

The dirty oil cooler.  When changing the oil from now on I am diffenitely going to try better in diverting the oil.

Here are the fans fitted into place.  I actually elongated the three oil mounting holes that I showed in one of the original pics.  I just used a dremel with a diamond bit to oblong the holes a bit.  It just gives a bit more room to get things in place.  Make sure and use some touch up paint in the new elongated holes so they don't rust.

This pic is of the fan on the oil cooler from the back side.  The way I adjusted things was to leave the rubber bands on the fans to keep them together and then put the zip ties through.  To me it made things easier.

Pics nine and ten are of the oil cooler and fans in place.  Pic nine is with the zip ties through the oil cooler but not yet secured on the front.

Here is the oil cooler and fans all mounted up.  The running of the wires is very straight forward.  I didn't bother to take pics of that.  Just went along the frame with the other wiring and found the accessary plug.

Nicely done  :2vrolijk_21: I take it the fans are mounted on sucking air through the cooler apposed to blowing
I was just wondering how much more muck would be sucked up off the wheel in to the cooling fins with the
suckion of the fans. I saw in the one photo there was a fair bit of muck in the fins just by being thrown up

Thats why I asked if the fans were sucking or blowing through the cooler. If there sucking threw the cooler
from the front it may increase the amount of muck build up, but if they are blowing threw cooler fins I'd be more
inclined to think the fans (witch I believe must spin in what the 12/1600 bracket) it would help in keeping them
fins clearer of muck by the air from the fans deflecting a certain amount coming from the front. (I don't know it's just how my mind works) As for the fans blowing I wouldn't think there would be much heat down there to be
concerned with the fans would still be blowing and moving air (again I don't know it's just the way my mind works)

Saying all that it would be great to know how they work out for you. It would be something to install

Very nicely done.  :2vrolijk_21:

Don't think I will do it but what i do know is that the oil cooler gets very dirty and it would not be a bad idea just to take it off once a year and give it a good clean.

Nice work. At the very least I'll be removing and cleaning mine thanks to your pics.
