Trouble with H-D Locking Detachable Latch
« on: January 14, 2013, 04:54:33 PM »

I am sure that this has come up before but I got a few nice accessories for the Skunk this Christmas and a lock set to help keep them where they belong.  I mounted the locking latches on both the luggage rack and the passenger back rest and neither one will latch to the 4-point docking kit. They did lock on before I switched the latch.

It appears that the slot that is recessed on the plunger is not cut back enough to allow the to slide over the mount.

Has anyone been able to make this work?  :nixweiss: HD part #90300047. The catalog and instructions say that they should work.

Otherwise they might be going back and a set of Brukus Bullets will be replacing them.

Thanks!

Your problem is the placement of the washer on the locks. On one side it's on the outside and on the other it's on the inside. It makes the spacing so the lock slips over the post and dosn't hit the thicker part of the post.

Thanks King RG, I tried that but the thickness of the head that contains the lock keeps the side of the latch from getting any closer to the upright or the rack. All I end up with is a gap the size of the washer.

It would seem that the relief edge on the latch is to allow it to slip past the larger diameter stud and if I place the latch by itself on the stud it nests nicely but it won't clear the release tab to slide off. If it isn't designed to slide on that way there really isn't any need for the relief.

based on that pic...the cam is installed wrong...on the head part where you apply pressure to latch and loch should be facing out away from the backrest frame...

It was, I just had the cam set that way to show the clearances.

I talked to the parts guys at the dealer today and they called tech service. Apparently the catalog is wrong and the locks will not fit the FL chassis only XL, Dyna and Softail.

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Granted the Softail version works smoother but, Touring ones do work. Are there different ones for different models?

Do you have part numbers for the touring ones that you have? The 90300047 is the one that is shown in the current catalog.

I've used them on a couple of bikes, both FL's. What happens when you keep the lock in the same position as pictured and put it on the other side of the bike? That makes the flat side of the lock lay against the bar with the washer in between.

When you place either side of the latch body against the upright or rack the increased size of the head (pushing area) comes in contact with the accessory and won't rotate. I have tried them in every position and the only way that I can figure that they would work is to modify or cut them down.

My locks work fine, on both the TP and the stock backrest. I'll have a look at how they are put together.

That would be great, thanks!

Well, you've got me scratching my head. I wish I lived close, I'd really like to see it. There has to be someone on the forum that's put these things on that lives close that could help you.

Well, upon further inspection I only have the lock on the TP...and only one on the right side.  Of course, the screw is recessed, and, there appear to be a washer between the turning lock and the TP bracket.

It takes a bit of forced wiggling to get it to pivot and lock...but, I think it's getting easier.

Thanks for looking, it appears that the MoCo mis-marked the catalog. That would be a first.

I just installed mine on my 2013 Ultra CVO and I have the same issue.  It sucks and may use something else if there isn't a solution.
