There is no adjustment on a hydralic clutch.  You can bleed the system thats it.

If the tight to the grip w/ little "free play" is your concern; you'll get used to it. Had mine in twice for the "problem" and I finally learned how to finesse it. Second nature now.

The only thing I would change about mine, if I could is the engagement point.  I have to pull it in almost full travel before it is fully disengaged.  I have always adjusted the others to be released with about 1/2" of travel left.

Thanks grc!

I have gotten used to it over time, and you are right about it getting better over time.  I'll have the boys follow your recommendation when I take it in for my 5K in a couple weeks.

the reason I asked was for the future.

When my bike was new, the bike would pretty much go as soon as I release the clutch.  I am more used to it going about a 1 inch after.  So when I had the 1k service, I asked for the clutch to be adjusted the way I like and it was..   So I am surprised when you all say that you do not adjust the clutch...

There is no adjustment. However, check the fluid level because as the plates wear, the pack gets thinner and pushes hyd. fluid back into the master cylinder, the reverse of how the brakes work.  Whan the cylinder gets to full, it will dead head the system, and make the clutch start to slip.

I haven't seen a shop manual for the hydraulic clutch, but does anyone know if they use the adjustment inside the derby cover? On cable actuated clutches there is a threaded stud that sticks out thru the center of the clutch spring/cover and a jam nut that locks the adjustment of that stud. To adjust it you loosen the jam nut and run the stud in with an allen wrench until it just touches the push rod (or whatever it contacts?). Then you back the threaded stud out by 1/2 to 1 turn (3/4 turn is usually good) and re-tighten the jam nut. By varying the amount the stud is backed off you can affect the location of the friction point. According to the shop manual for my (cable actuated) '05 RK the adjustment should be performed when the bike is cold.

Maybe there is someone out there that can tell us if this is also true for hydraulic clutches...? :-/

bikerboy,

The hydraulic clutch units do not have that adjustment.  They operate similar to hydraulic brakes and are self adjusting (one difference is that as the clutch plates wear, the fluid level in the master cylinder rises, unlike the brake system).

do we have to do any sort of maintenance apart from checking fluid level?

The only maintenance on the hydraulic clutch is a recommended fluid flush and change every two years (same as brakes), plus lubricating the clutch lever pivot at your regular service intervals.

To adjust the clutch, you must pull the primary and adjust the center nut on the clutch hub, hydraulic clutchs are only for ease of pull.Adjust the clutch like any other adjustable clutch but no cables.
