Rog, got started on it first day back.  But then found myself short a few gaskets in the "complete gasket kit."  Couple of other issues as well but nothing insurmountable.  Won't be able to get remaining needed parts until first of the week though.  Probably close to next weekend before I'll have time to work on it again and finish things up though.  Will summarize the task when it's all done.

Of course Gary.  It'd be sophomoric, elementary, even downright gay not to share some pics of the bike when it's done.  I'd never consider keeping such a topic behind closed doors just because I thought everyone else might not be looking  ;D .  Did have one other unexpected discovery though.  The attached image is an example that might be titled: "Damn, sure glad I had good synthetics in that crankcase."

Is that from manufacturing or from running in the engine?  That's a strange-looking pattern -- goes straight across on the rear (front facing in your photo) con rod. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Might be worth checking the operation of the cooling jet. [smiley=nervous.gif]

Don, looks like it coulda been done at the factory to heat to put bearing races in rods.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] ????  It would be interesting to know if the bearing rollers and cages were also blued.  :o  spyder

Spyder, I keep trying to convince myself it could be about a hundred different things done for assembly.

Don....you must be pulling an all-niter.  Nice to know there's someone I can call and BS with when I'm up wandering around drinking coffee at 3 AM.

Strange deal, from the looks of the pic there was no surface flaking as is usually the case with a severe high heat issue.

Don,  what it looks like to me is that the motor was shut down at some time when the oil was at an extreme temp and then cooled off very quickly and this caused the discoloration. Another thought would be when the pins were installed at the factory they heat the roda to install them and someone then cooled them too quickly. Check the play in the crank and then the rods to make sure that they are not out.

You are not going to have this out of your mind unless you get a second opinion or split the cases. Either way you are this far into the build if it we me I would not take any chances.

Good luck Don
