Removing the ugly rear light reflector
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:31:21 AM »

Mates, I want to remove that ugly reflector that sits above rear tail lamp. Before I begin messing, is there any pitfalls, or easy tricks to doing this that would be helpful to know? Thanks in advance

Before I went with the kury curved holder,,  i loosened up the whole assemmbly enough as to where I was able to snip it off with a wire cutter. I knew I wasn't going to use that again,, it's in the the drawer with a notch cut out of it.  Then just snugged it all back together.   Pretty simple to do.

How did u loosen it? Is there enough room to stick hand behind fender to loosen/tighten?

Yes there is. 2 or 3 nuts. I cannot remember. Once you remove the nuts the plate bracket will pull out from the fender. The reflector has the wire run threw it. With a pair of side cutters cut the plastic on the lower part of the reflector which mounts under the plate bracket. Bolt it back on. The hardest part is laying down low enough to get at the nuts inside the fender.

Yep, thats exactly what I did. Looks much better without it. I also tinted my tail light and signals at the same time.

There is already a thread out there on this and it looks like the easiest way as long as you don't want to save the reflector is to take off the license plate and remove the two screws under it. The unit will fall forward. Then you can cut the mounting ring of the reflector and pull it out. Doing this keeps you from having to go from the back of the fender by the wheel.

A friend just did this with his RG and decided to carefully remove the reflector and the take a razor blade to cut the reflector bracket where it lines up with the gasket and reinstall the bracket. This fills the step in the gasket and makes everything look smooth. I will be doing that as soon as spring gets here! :2vrolijk_21:

Get the curved from kuryakin.    So much better than the stock unit even with the reflector removed.

DITTO, Thats exactly what I did with a razor blade so the black gasket is even and fills the gap, looks like the way it  should have come from the factory!

Here is a close up of the finished job with the reflector stem still in place.
