Extended warranty
« on: February 20, 2013, 04:05:40 PM »

Picking up the Breakout Friday, wondering about an extended warranty. Have any of you purchased one? Of the previous 3 new Harleys I bought, I never purchased the extended warranty. This is my first CVO and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea for this bike? Any opinions? Thanks

There have been many threads on your issue so you might want to check the search function.

Here is one:  Extended Warranty

Many, if not most of us, have the extended warranty.

It depends on your personal circumstances; there is no one correct answer for everyone.

Would it be easier for you financially to spend up to a couple grand now to buy a policy that you may or may not ever use, or would it perhaps be better to just bank that money and have it available three years down the road IF you actually have something fail?  I've always chosen the "pay as you go" method myself, and I'm currently way ahead of the game.

The way I look at it is this....with cars, there are soooooooo many things that can go wrong, so I have purchased an extended warranty on my last 3 cars/truck.  The only time I used any of them is with my 06 F-150....there was a known spark plug issue and the power windows had issues.  On my 2 Acuras.....it was free money to Acura, I NEVER used them.

For my bike....I didn't get one because on a Harley, if something goes wrong, you fix it with something better.....if something goes wrong.  $1500-$2000 is a lot of cash to some up with....especially if you never need it.

I'd wait till the original (free) 2 years warranty is up then decide ...

Extended Warranty favors the seller (obviously) - feel lucky ?

I think an Extended Warranty is ok ONLY for people that that put on ALOT of miles each year

but others think differently ...

I don't buy it ...

Whats the point in the waranty when as soon as you make any improvements it becomes void!

I bought the extended warranty on the '12 because the one on the '08, that came with it from the PO, paid for itself, with 2 sets of front rotors, an front motor mount, 1 f & 1 r tire, wheel bearings... and a few other thing that slip my mind at the moment. But, most of that was done at over 50,000 miles.

My '08 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD is in the shop for it's third warranty issue......first the turbo and a bunch of associated items (just under $7000), the a diesel leak requiring a fuel pump, hoses, clips and other stuff (over $6000)....then a major fuel 'leak', the line going to the filter had a 'faulty' clip.....as this all happened just after 60,000km...I'm sure glad I bought the extended gold plan!

Individual decision. As someone else said, I would probably wait until three or four months before the two year factory warranty expires before I would decide. If you have a lot of problems buy the ESP if you have none or few problems save the money. Thats what I did, had my 09' for almost a year before factory plan expired, only problem I had was two times with the radio, I did not purchase ESP. So far that has not come back to bite me on the azz.

My good friend has a 2008 Diesel Jeep like yours. He bought it used with 40,000 km on it and and did not get the extended warranty. He ended up spending $5000 + + + for turbo repair and exhaust repair about a year after he bought it.  He hates this Jeep now. Keeps ranting abut how much of  POS it is. Lesson to be learned here eh?

I normally don't get extended warranties but when I bought this bike used it had the ESP and the previous owner worked with me to transfer it over from Harley. He had purchased the 5 year so have it thru 2015.  I like the piece of mind with a bike that costs this much.  So far no issues but may consider extending it when it runs out in 2015.  I plan to keep this bike and ride for many miles and years to come.

With all the whining I see here about HD quality I am surprised that 1: anyone is buying them, 2: not everyone have extended warrantee.

It a union worker assembled product - get the extended warrantee. I did

I keep the ESP on both the '05 SEEG and the '09 SERG, it has been money well spent for me.

Me = windshield, ESP = bug
