I have a RT 665, I use a Mac , and I run the Garmin Lifetime Map Updater software. On Monday it notified me that 2013.40 North America map was available. I plugged in the 665, and it updated the software first, then told me to disconnect the 665 and let it reboot and install the software, then plug it in again. I did this, and it updated the map without any issues. Took nearly three hours to do it.

I have not experienced the issues reported in this thread. I must be lucky!

Jerry has a pretty good point, I have a couple of Garmin devices... one for the bike the other for the car/van, both have the lifetime map update package on them.

I have noticed little to no difference with the multiple downloads, in fact the only change I can recall is our own subdivsion was eventually added after being absent for about two years.

I doubt there would be significant changes in the five or six updates put out every year, I think after reviewing this thread I think the plan for me from now on will be limiting the downloads to just once a year.

Guess I should! I have an older Nuvi 650 with which I have had problems updating - including once where it said there was no system software installed, and I had to some kind of "hard reset" to get it to reload everything and work again - but no problems (so far) with the RT 665.

I will say that the Garmin software seems pretty clunky and slow...

My mistake was loading the new and improved Garmin express updater for maps, as I could no longer find Life time map updater on their site.  I had to replace my hard drive a few weeks ago.

Once I was able to find the Older Garmin Life time Map updater it loaded the maps just fine to the RT 660 and the Mac.  Express would not load to the Mac.

I think Gerry was correct about what is going on with Garmin:

Lifetime Maps Policy (this for the nüMaps but I am sure it is standard):

¹If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.

I sounds like they are trying to force an end to the “useful life” of some of their products.

From what I've read in this thread owners aren't given the option to load the maps to their computers (with the new software) if the internal memory of their Zumo doesn't have enough storage space. However according to their (Garmin's) policy if the device is able to load the data to an SD card then your product (GPS) hasn't expired it's "useful life". Seems they aren't fulfilling their (Garmin's) own policy. :nixweiss:

Just the opposite Gary.  What was reported from Garmin is that when using the new Garmin Express to update your maps if your device does in fact have sufficient internal memory for the update then the option to also download the update to your computer is not available.  Don't know if you could update the device then make a second pass to update your computer.  After encountering the message that I did not have sufficient internal memory for the update I quit Garmin Express and found the link to the old Map Updater program.

Had the same problem last week. Never did the update because I could not believe Garmin Support when they told me my 665 was bad and to send it in. You saved me some research on this problem.   :orange:    Seams like evry time some one has some thing that works just fine they go ahead and break it.

Happy to report that after deleting the new update software and installing the older Garmin Map Update, find the link to it in this thread the update went smooth as silk. Updated to the device as well as the computer. Happy, Happy, happy! :orange: :mango: :bananarock:

From briefly scanning some of the threads on the Zumo Forum regarding this it appears that if your internal memory is at the level that will only accept a certain section of the available data (IE lower 49, east/west regions only) then you would be able to download those to your unit. However before this new software you could download everything to your computer and then using the map install feature you could then copy the entire map set from your computer and install it on your SD card. With only being able to get a part of the map set to your GPS and not the entire map set to your computer that option is no longer available.

I did the download for software on my 660, it told me to disconnect and reboot, I did, reconnected and it downloaded the remainder - no problems at all. Took 1.5 hrs but otherwise a breeze. I did our back-up 1490 and my work 1450 and had no problems with them either.

Finally got around to doing the update today by using the old MapUpdater software, loading maps to computer only, then using Mapsource to select all of the map(s) and loading them to my SD card. I'm using the Zumo 550 (which no longer has enough internal memory to load the entire USA) and everything is working fine.

Thanks Jerry for the headsup on this and the link to get the MapUpdater software (which I have saved on my computer for future use). :2vrolijk_21:
