Some of the 05's had bad valve guides or seals which caused the oil useage, not sure about the 04's..  If you run the oil dipstick level right at the full mark, just keep the oil level 1/2 way between full and add and that might help.  The bad valve guides/seals could account for the black oil though.  Good luck!

Big Time,

Two different issues.  The oil will turn dark fairly quickly, and this is a normal thing.  The oil consumption at 500 miles per quart, however, is far from normal.  As Boatman indicated, valve stem oil seals would be high on my short list of suspects.  Was any head work done when you did the rings?

What do your spark plugs look like?  I was replacing plugs about every 1000 miles as well as consuming about a quart of oil every 1000 miles.  Valve guides/valve seals were replaced under warranty and solved both problems...  This was on my 04 SEEG

I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS A 05 SEUC THAT USES A QT OF OIL TO 400 MILES THEY HAD THE BACK JUG OFF 3 TIMES.THEY TOLD HIM THE SYN.OIL WAS TO SLICK NOT LETTING RINGS SEAT.I TALKED TO MY DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY PUT REG. OIL IN THEIR FRESH MOTORE FOR 5000 MILE THEN GO BACK TO SYN.OIL .ALSO THEY SAID HARLEY BREAKS IN SE MOTORS .
