Dealer replacing cams and lifters
« on: March 02, 2013, 11:54:09 AM »

Took my 2013 CVO RG Anni in to the dealer, they are replacing a saddle bag. Clear coat issues. I told them that the other day she started ticking really loud and that I shut it off and restarted and the sound went away. They just called and said they are going to replace the cams and lifters. So far they have replaced the fairing a saddle bag and now the cams and lifters. I bought this bike in late Aug and have almost 7000 mile on it.

I love HD's but they've got to fix their quality issues before I'll buy another.

Sounds like you at least have a good dealer to work with. Good Luck!

You might consider having them install the 259 cams while they are in there

Why are they replacing the cams and lifters? Is there evidence of a failed component or just shotgun troubleshooting?

They ended up only replacing the lifters the cams looked ok. A couple of days ago I was riding and the engine started ticking much louder then usually do. When I told the dealer they suggested taking a look.

Whats up with that ? That's  NOT  many miles at all for a repair like that ALREADY. Did the dealer give a reason?

I doubt the dealer could give a real reason, since it sounds (as hd-dude mentioned) like a shotgun diagnostic approach was used.  Once they tear something down they are bound to replace something or they won't be reimbursed under warranty.  Harley doesn't pay for fishing expeditions by their dealers.

Most dealers wouldn't have gone into the cam chest at all unless the engine was exhibiting symptoms while in their possession.  They don't usually take a customer's word for these sorts of intermittent problems, expecially if they can't duplicate the problem themselves.  It's quite possible there was nothing wrong with the lifters either, but as I said the only chance they have of being reimbursed for looking around is to replace something (and hope Harley doesn't ask for the parts back and test them).

There are a lot of things that could cause a ticking noise that starts suddenly and then goes away just as suddenly.  One could be a piece of trash in the lifter preventing the internal valve from seating I suppose.
