2012 FLHTCUSE7 questions installing amp in fairing
« on: March 16, 2013, 01:20:43 PM »

UPDATED BELOW IN THREAD:

I am thinking about installing an aftermarket amp in the fairing on my 2012 SEUC.  My current thoughts are the Biketronics BT2180 2 channel amp with their Titan II speakers in the fairing and in the lowers.  Here are the questions that are coming to mind:

I've noticed some posts about having to relocate different modules to install an amp on top of the stock head unit.  Is this something that I need to consider on the 2012?  I've only had my fairing off once so far and I have no recollection of what I saw in the stereo area.

If there are modules that need relocated, I can't imagine that this would be an easy task in any sense of the word.  Just how difficult is it?

Moving up to the 6.5" speakers in the fairing, and using the adaptors to do so, I am assuming that if I want to change out the speaker grilles to the ones from Hawg Wired that I would still be able to do so.  I figured that the bolt pattern and size of the opening at the fairing don't change, so the other grilles should still work.  Am I correct?

Finally, this question is only asking for opinions...using the Harley lower fairing speaker pods, I was thinking about just having them painted to a gloss black, in case I can't readily get a good match on the lower fairing color.  I have the orange/black bike, so the lowers are the black metallic color.  Any opinions on whether this would look ridiculous or not?  I thought that it may make the speaker pods and speakers themselves jump out as a nice separate upgrade and not look stupid at all, but I'm just not sure.

I just took the fairing off and not on my best day am I attempting to try to fit an amp in there.  There are 3 modules on top of the head unit and I don't see anyway that I am going to relocate all 3 of them to fit an amp in there.  It may be close with just the top one relocated, but I'm not about to go through everything and get an amp here and find out that I can't get it to work.  Somebody on here will probably say it will work, but I'm not ready to put my bike out of commission long enough for me to get it back together.

So, now my question is changing.  Has anybody tried any different speakers with the stock amp that will give a noticeable difference in sound quality and/or volume over the boom audio?

I just did this exact same upgrade a couple of weeks ago.  I installed the BT-2180 with the Titan II's in the front and I put J&M Rocker's in the rear pods.  It sounds good but honestly, until it warms up and I can 'road' test it, I can't comment on how well it really sounds because my whole point was to get clear sound at highway speeds.

I didn't relocate the two modules on the head unit.  I was able to mount the amp sideways on top of those by moving the harness above and retying off at a higher point.  It was a major byatch getting the fairing back on but I did.  Doing so became a two-person job and I'm not looking forward to taking it off again.

I contacted Bill at BT and he said that they were coming up with new instructions that instruct moving the two add on modules below the head unit.  I have no idea how that would work as it seems extremely tight there as well.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing what you went forward with.

If that's your bike in the profile on the left of the screen, it looks like you have an '08.  If you look at the photo above of mine, there are 3 modules there instead of the 2 that you have.  I was figuring the fit based on trying to relocate the one on top and then mounting like you did, but it looked as though it was going to be a little tighter than I wanted to try to play around with...that and I wasn't quite sure what to do with that other module.  I'm going to measure up the possibility of the BT480 with 2 small amps and separate power supply also from Biketronics.  That has the same power ratings as the BT2180.  They show a photo on their website with the 2 amps mounted to the inner fairing just below and to the sides of the speakers.  I'm just a bit worried about getting them completely secure there, as it's not a flat surface there.

A solution for ateast two of the modules is a bracket, easily installed, that moves them under the radio. The bracket is from Scott Ezzell-ezzell141@comcast.net.

Tif2 on here uses it as do I and many others.

Good luck.
