HD Profile ouring front lowering kit vs. aftermarket kits
« on: March 17, 2013, 12:00:38 PM »

I have a 2006 SEUC with rear low profile HD touring shocks and want to lower the front end as well.  Harley offers the front lowering kit for $99.95 54628-06.  Hass anyone had these installed on your bike?  Are you happy with it?  Any big advantage to aftermarket brands? Thanks.

Progressive monotubes come in a 1" lower configuration, and are a big improvement in ride and handling.

Do not, and I repeat, do not....waste your money on HD suspension components of any description. They are no better than the junk they put on from the factory.  As mentioned, Progressive Monotubes come in a 1" lower version...they cost a bit more, but are 1000 times better.

Are you sure you have the 12" shocks on the back of the bike? They do not come with those...stock is 13" shocks.  Regardless, change them out ASAP, as they are crap too. Unless you need the height lowered on the bike for purposes of reaching the ground better, I'd think hard about lowering the bike....more hard parts start dragging in corners.

Thank you both for your input.  I need the bike lowered to be able to reach the ground better, especially when riding 2 up.  When I tries to add lowering blocks, the harley dealer said the bike already had the rear lowering shocks in place, so I couldn't add the blocks.  I still need the bike lowered more, so I thouht I would lower the front end.  Are the Progressive monotubes that much better than the harley front lowering kit?  If so, I will order them.

Yes..the Progressive monotubes are superior to the MOCO front lowering kit...

As Midnight Rider mentioned, your bike came stock with 13" rear shocks, so unless someone else has already installed 12" shocks, your dealer gave you bad information...

Be really careful about putting lowering blocks on the rear shocks...there is a wiring harness attached to the underside of the rear fender and those blocks can let the tire rub under certain conditions.  I personally just don't think it's a good idea to use the blocks.  If you have the 12" shocks on the rear, that's about as low as you want to go in the back...lowering the front an inch will help some.  Other options would be a lower seat, or a seat with a narrow nose. A good cobbler can add 1/2" thicker soles to your boots too.

The other option is something like the Legend Air shocks...they allow the rear end to be dropped 3" when you need to get your feet on the ground for parking, etc.   It cost more money, of course, but it solves the problems in a number of ways.

Does anyone have the harley front lowering kit installed on their ride?  Are you happy with it?  Right now the bike is at the shop for the winter and I would like to have the front end lowered.  Most recommend the Progressive monotubes.  I would like to get the bike back in a week or two and woul like the dealer to install the front lowering kit.  It would be easier if I go with the Harley Profile front lowering kit- rather than order and wait for the Progressive tubes.  Any input?
Thanks.

Maybe if you gave us a bit more info we could steer you in the right direction.  Is this a bike you've owned for awhile, or did you just buy it?  If you've owned it for awhile, how satisfied are you with the actual action and performance of the front suspension?  If you think the front end damping is fine and all you want to do is lower the bike, then the H-D kit will accomplish that for $100 plus labor.  However, if you want both a lowered suspension AND miuch improved fork action (ride, handling, less brake dive, etc.), then spend a couple hundred more and get the monotubes.  And btw, don't forget to make sure the rear shocks really are the lowered version (like we told you in that other thread).  You don't want to lower the front with a stock height rear suspension as it will adversely affect stabiity.  Don't assume when dealing with this stuff, have them measure and verify.

It shouldn't take a large amount of time for a dealer to get the monotubes if that's what you really want.  I'll bet they are stocked by a local distributor that your dealer also uses to purchase most of the other aftermarket stuff they sell.  If you want to buy them yourself and take them to the dealer for installation, then yes there would be some extra time involved.  Some dealers won't install parts you bring with you, so check with them before you do this.

Please only one thread per subject... your post has been merged w/your previous thread.

Sounds like you should go w/the Harley part if you don't want to wait for Progressive's. :2vrolijk_21:

Me personally I have and prefer Progressive's. :bigok:

So ... is the consensus to stay with 13" rears and use the Progressive monotubes with a 1" lower configuration for better ride and handling?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Never lower the front more than the rear.

I suppose lowering the front 1" is better than 2" in regards to handling?
