Actual tank capacity
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:36:51 PM »

With the fuel gauges and range meters about as reliable as our politicians, most of us count miles and many figure our bikes MPG based on how much we put in. Figuring we could have gone X amount of miles further based on what we think is still in the tank. I havent ever filled my tank from dry, so I dont know this answer. Does the capacity listed for the bikes account for the recessed filler area? IE, does a touring tank hold 6 gal when filled to the bottom of the filler area, or is that 5.8 gal? Meaning a full 6 could only be achieved by overflowing the tank.

Yep, I forgot to fill up, knowing that I need some fuel before leaving my house.

I just made it!

And NO, this is not normal thing to run that low.

I still can't get use to the fuel light gauge on the FLHXSE3 tank.  In the day light, you can't hardly see it.  Not to mention, it's not very accurate.  When I installed the Dakota Digital gauges, I bought the six pack for a little less than the four individual gauges were.  I'm thinking of moving my tweeters to the fairing mirror holes and sticking in fuel and oil temp gauges.  I have the Dakota fuel gauge on my FLHTK and it is extremely accurate and with my bad eyes, very easy to read.

Awesome, thanks all. I have no trouble reading teh LED gauge, and I trust it way more than the standard guage, or even the stupid range meter. I cant figure out how that thing calculates at all. I'll stick to filling up under 200 miles.

I ran out of gas years ago on my old '85 Kawi Eliminator. When I bought it, the dealer told me it was full.  Well, it was nearly empty and on reserve, which I didn't check before riding off. No fuel gauge back then. Got about 10 miles from the dealership on an interstate and it quits. I was lucky and pulled off a conveniently-located exit ramp and coasted right into a gas station.

Ever since then, I am OCD about gas. I usually stop when the range says 50 miles, or when the gauge on the tank only has 2 LEDS lit. I usually need a pee and/or smoke break by then anyway!

Running out of gas ain't fun. The most I've ever pumped into the Honey Badger is 4.8 gallons, and I don't ever plan to be able to pump any more than that!

As the OP appears to have a SESG, with the side filler, the same would apply to my '12 FLTRXSE.

I've been able to put in 5.4xx to 5.7xx gallons, depending on just how much chance I want to take.... but really.. pushing an 800 pound motorcycle is not my idea of fun.

On my previously owned '09 FLTRSE3, I put in 6.1 gallons with the center neck.

Reality is you wont put as much fuel in a tank with the side fill versus the top fill.

Have never trusted gas gauge. Use trip meter. When I get to 200 miles, stop for gas.

I wish I could get 200 miles out of a tank!  I'd be stranded 20 miles before I got there.

Cowboy

With the E10 fuel I get 195-220 per tank (havent run out yet)

There are a couple of places that sell non-ethanol fuel, and the claim is better mileage... gotta try that soon.

I know my cars get much better MPG with non-ethanol so the same should apply.
