06 engine upgrades
« on: March 24, 2013, 10:11:26 AM »

I would like to get some feedback from some other members who have already been thru this process. I did the Zippers 575 cam upgrade last year along with the K&N air breather filter upgrade and the mufflers have been replaced with the Rinehart slip ons but I've kept the stock headpipes. The bike has been dynotuyned and shows 91HP and 108 Torque. It certainly runs much better than stock, and I am overall pleased with the performance, however I am curious to see if I could get some more out of the engine, and at minimal cost. Would replacing the headgasket and/or doing some headwork make a seat in the pants difference? Would replaving the stock headpipe system to a true dual setup make any difference?

I don't know for the 103' but with the 110' the true dual is necessary if you don't want your wife gets her right foot burnt when you ride at low speed.
For the performance, the engine looses a little bit of torque but gets the RPM faster.
The sound is also louder.

For choice of head pipes take a look at an old thread, about halfway down you will see a reply I got from S&S and Vance and Hines about head pipe selecting on a 2006 103" motor.

A good 2-1 exhaust (with a ghost pipe if you want the duals look) will really help you. Mild head work will help too, but that 103 already comes with SE Heads. Good choice in cams from what I've heard. Jim S. (HD-Dude) can give much better advice than me.

I have the same bike (same color too!), and almost the same build, (minus the cams). For me I am quite satisfied. My set up is air cleaner, free flowing D&D slip on mufflers, and TTS Master Tune. Our dyno numbers are very close, but your cams give you a bit more torque. I know my stock head pipes are holding me back, but I'm okay with it, I like the stock look. If I had any reason to go into the engine, I'd consider changing cams. But the bike has been bullet proof so far, so I'm not going to mess with a good thing.

The 575 cam was pretty much designed to be a "drop in" cam....I'm not sure I remember anyone doing a gasket change and headwork along with that particular cam.  Generally speaking, headwork, increased compression, and camshaft all need to be "matched" when making those kind of modifications.  The numbers you are getting are petty good for what you have done. True Duals on the bike would likely not improve those numbers much, if any.  And they could actually hurt the performance curve by making the TQ come in at a higher RPM.  They look good on the bike though.  A 2 into 1 pipe would get the most out of the motor, IMO. The question is how much? Would it be worth doing all that for a gain of 5TQ/5HP, if that?

For me, the answer would be no, given what you already have.

Looking at your numbers it appears to me your HP is a little low for a 103. Stock they will do 104 HP/105TQ all day long. That cam will make it run just a tad better On the 103's I perfer a Thunder Header with a falsie. It will run a lot better with that pipe.

Dawg, "Stock they will do 104 HP/105TQ all day long" pretty sure that isn,t accurate, but I could be wrong. My line of thinking is pretty much inline with Midnight Rider, so, assuming the stock headpipes are kept, would bumping up the 8.9 compression with my existing setup and doing a simple head gasket replacement be worth doing. Would I feel the difference?

Doc I stand corrected. They will do 104/104 with a good pipe and fuel mangement and A/C BUT the inside of the motor is stock!!!! I don't know what in the hell I was thinking. But I have seen quite a few push those numbers on different dynos!!!! Now that I think back I don't remember what Ole Punkin pushed we she was BONE stock!!!

The 103's will make plenty of power with a GOOD 2 into 1 pipe and A/C and GOOD fuel mangement with a tune. I ran my 103 for a while before I went inside the motor. As a matter of fact the 103 with that set up will out perform a 110 with the same setup. I was very suprised when they dynoed my 12 SEULTRA with the same setup, it is a dog compaired to my 103.

Remember we are comparing a bit of green apples vs red apples here in talking 103 vs 110.  The 103 with a 5 speed is hard to compare to a 110 with a 6 speed.

Stock my 06, 103 with air cleaner and SE slip on's made 94/101 tuned by Bob at RC Cycles.  It ran very well and I was happy till I lost the rear inner cam bearing (thank you HD for the crap parts) and the motorself destructed.

Now I have a 103 built (2008) by Brad at Yuill Bros in Reno, Yuill Bros YB13 gear drive cams, 1.94" intake, ports just cleaned not ported, .030" head gasket, 10.5:1, SE air cleaner and Yuill Bors true duals.  It makes 104 / 114 and seat of the pants it feels like 120/120 as compared to my 09 Ultra with a new 107, ported heads, Fueling 574 cams and Fullsac C Pipe with 2" baffles that makes 106/113.  And I have the 30 tooth sprocket on the 09.

Put the dyno sheets away, ride them and compare them.  I will take my 103 every day over the 107.

My 04 has John Sachs headwork, 030 head gasket s&s 570 cams with a se air cleaner.     A good tune with with a true dual exhaust system and I got 115 Hp and 119 tq. I'm glad I ride with a backrest.  I really enjoy riding this bike.  :2vrolijk_21:   Can't beat the ole 103.  I love it.

Doc,

Typically on the 4 I have owned they put out roughly 94 hp / 98 torque.  with A/C and Pipe and Tune.
