Define "accelerating." If you mean on even ground it just suddenly took off hope it's a switch problem. The "accel" part of the control switch can stick (have dealt with that twice before) and cause the system to take off. Both times a good spray of electrical contact cleaner and some compresed air cleaning out the switches solved the problem. Could also be an issue in the cruise control module though. Not likely but not impossible.
If, however, the accelleration was different you might have another problem though. Was it like this:
You climbed a grade and the bike maintained normal speed. After that the bike was going faster than it was before and wouldn't slow down.
If it was like that you've got a bad cruise cable (stepper cable is I think what Harley calls it). The cable is sticking in the cable housing. When the bike slowly accelerates under control of the cruise control to climb the grade the cable doesn't then slide back to its original position inside the housing when the cruise lets off. If you and I declerate we trist the grip back thereby pulling the cable back where it was. That doesn't happen with the cruise control. A sticky cable can have more grip than the bellcrank's return spring has pull.
