50K Service questions
« on: April 15, 2013, 10:45:40 AM »

Hey all,

Getting prepared for my 50K service (actually bike has 55K but had an off frame rebuild back in late 2004).

I usually bring the bike in every other year to have the dealer do the 10K  service (I do the 5K, air filter, plugs, and all fluid changes).

Steering head and swing arm are ok and I will wait until they actually need replacement since you need to disassemble them to check them.

I had major engine work done in late 2008 only for replacing the chain cam to gear cams (got rid of the cam tensioners, new crank, backplate, rebuilt fueling Oil pump, timken bearing etc).

Last HD service was 2/2010 40K.

Questions
Fuel filter - had it changed in 2009 at 38K, anyone suggest changing it now or wait until the 25K interval (I have the kit already)?
Front fork fluid change - service is suggested at 25K and 50K (running progressive springs).
Bleeding brakes/clutch - service suggest to inspect at 5K intervals.
Zipper’s Tapered Adjustable Pushrod #403-088 - previous tech suggested just checking for play when cylinder is at TDC and try to spin the PR.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

I change the fuel filter every 25,000 miles.

It is located in the tank, is it an easy thing to do?

08 and newer are markedly different than an 05.  Still in the tank but now use a large round specialty tool and the ingress/egress of the tank guts make you hold your tongue and stand on one foot in an entirely different fashion.

Yes, 07 will be the same as the 05.  01 and prior touring are a little different and the 08 is more different.

Just reread the initial post.  I change mine at 25k.  Whether it's showing signs of problem or not.  Too much of a pain in the ass to deal with on the road.

My bike have around 38K miles, so I think I'd better change it soon!

You need to quit buying that cheap gas Don.  Try the good stuff that comes without the chunks.

I used to change it at 40k intervals Jerry.  Then, of course, at about 35k and 400 miles from home one weekend I got the dreaded chug chug choke choke of a plugged filter.  It's not like I recommend it for others to follow.  But in my case there's always some rainy Sunday with nothing to do somewhere in the 25k range and the filters are cheap preventative.  I admit it's an abundance of caution.  But.... well.... it makes me feel good :drink: .

The good thing is that I think you can have the part quickly. Here in France, that makes 2 weeks since I can't order my exhaust valve because the dealer is moving from a place to an other, and when I will be able to order it I guess I'll have to wait maybe 10 days to have it... :-\

WHEN CHANGING
THE FUEL FILTER, THEY SUPPLY A NEW FUEL HOSE. BE VERY CARFUL TAKING THE OLD HOSE OFF THE FUEL PUMP NIPPLE . DO NOT PUT ANY SIDEWAYS PRESSURE ON THAT NIPPLE OR TWIST ON IT,IT WILL BREAK OFF QUITE EASILY. I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY, AND IT COST ME 400 PLUS BUCKS ,AND A WEEK WAITING FOR A NEW FUEL PUMP TO BE SHIPPED OUT. OUCH!!!!

Don
Is there a complete Listing somewhere that shows everything to be done for a 50K Service?
My Neighbor and his brother will both be due this year.
My SERK will probably be early next year.
