Thunderheader Fitment to 2012 SG
« on: April 20, 2013, 12:50:57 PM »

Looking to pick up a 2-1 set of thunderheaders and was hoping that someone might know about any potential fitment issues with my 2012 CVO SG.  If anyone happens to have them installed, some pictures would be awesome as well as any performance feedback you may have.

I have looked at the new 4 inch xtreme thunderheaders but it doesn't look like they make a ghost pipe to accompany it.  Anyone know any different?

One last question, what would be the performance difference between adding thunderheader slip ons to my fullsac x pipe header vs. exchanging the entire system for the thunderheader 2-1.

Thanks gang!

So far as performance goes, I am a big fan of Thunderheaders. Had a set on a hotrod Evo that performed excellently. Had a set on my 05 SE V-Rod that put that ride into rocketship level performance. They are a superb peformance product.

BUT

They are loud obnoxious pipes that attract unwanted attention from Law Enforcement.

Simply stated, if you install a set of Thunderheaders on your ride, you'll be getting a ticket before the chrome begins to blue

Thanks spiderman...

I have several friends who ride with thunderheaders and have never had a prob with LEOs.  I think it may somewhat depend on the engine build and how happy you get with the throttle.  But i agree, they are some pretty loud pipes when compared to others.

I am pretty sure I have made up my mind on trying these out, I just need to make sure that they are gonna fit without issue.  I am on still on the fence about going with the 2-1 or just putting the thunderheader mufflers on my x-pipe.  Obviously, the mufflers are going to be cheaper, but if the performance difference would be noticeable, I 'll go with the 2-1.

Would also like to know if anyone has any 411 on the x-treme 4 inch series.  I have tried to contact a couple of dealers but none of them have been able to get back to me yet.

Originally I wanted to use the thunderheaders and was talked out of it, there are 2 things that I didn't like, More noise than average causing unwanted attention, and the bluing issues...
I've seen it and heard it on a 13 cvo road glide with some work and boy did it sound like a MoFo!
Oh, lastly, I'm over the noise part, I'm getting old (41) and I don't wanna get to the destination with my ears ringing :)

Little bump here....

Anyone else have any input on whether or not I will have any fitment issues.

Thanks!

I am a Thunder header dealer and i can tell you that out of all the pipe manufactures out there the thunder headers are among the worst in my opinion in the fit and finish department. They have however got better recently and have updated their heat shields. They do perform very well and sound great, if you like loud! The only issue we see performance wise is that they typically have a torque dip in the low rpm range.

The fit and finish of the Thunderheader is horrible, I would recommend Drago's or D & D they both have great service, finish, performance, and the both have available dummy pipes.

The Evo I had a set on had such a nasty cam that low rpm was something like 4,000  :D

As to the SE V-Rod, they are known for making their power at higher RPMs and the Thunderheader only complimented that - - however, at 8,000 RPM's these pipes created a whole new definition of loud and at 10,000 RPM's they were literally sonic enough to shatter windows. That V-rod sounded like a Ferarri tuned for the track and went every bit as fast, but I never rode it without a full helmet and custom fit earplugs

Aight, sound like the Thundeheader is not going to be the way to go.  I keep hearing a lot of concerns and I am not going to go down that road again like I did with the CFRs.

Switching gears a little and looking at the Rush and Dragos 2-1 set ups.

Trevor - I replied to your PM about the Drago's S/C/S-4 I run. You would be hard pressed to find a better 2-1 pipe anywhere, and it's the best price-performer out there as well, at $650 plus $300 for the ghost pipe. It's designed by Frank and manufactured by Rush. Excellent fit and finish.

FYI, I talked with Frank for about 3 hours on several phone calls, and asked him what was surely an annoying number of questions, before I decided on the S/C/S-4 vs the Dragula, Fat Cat, or Thunderheader. Frank is a no-BS, stand-up guy, and he provides the best customer service I've ever received ANYWHERE.

Throw out the Rush and go Dragos if that's the 2 you are looking at.
