Air pressure for Metzler me880
« on: May 03, 2013, 05:38:54 PM »

Just talked to Metzler about the cupping on the rear tire  on my 07 SERK  I have been setting the pressure at 40  and always cupped the tires. They say the pressure is between 44 and 50  preferably about 47 . That is why the last 3 sets cup in 5000 miles. Anyone else have the problem? Billy

I'm on my first set of Metzler's on my 08 SERK, had a number Dunlop's both front and rear that cupped, some within 3,000 miles.  I hope you are wrong about the air pressure, 50# in the rear tire will make for a very rough ride and may impair it's cornering abilities.  I'm running 42 on the rear and 40 up front.

No matter how much air I kept in the metzlers, I would wear out a rear in 5000 miles and that sucks.  I tried the Dunlop elite 3 and love em.  I have them on my 04 Seeg and still are good with 10k on them.   On per 09 touring bikes, you can't beat them.  They ride and handle great too.   I think as good as the metzlers.    And they last too.   :2vrolijk_21:

If I can assume you're running the stock size 170/60R17, then whoever you spoke to at Metzler gave you bad info.  The attachment is from their own documentation, and it lists the inflation pressure for that tire as 40 - 42 psi cold.  Other sizes have recommended pressures of up to 50 psi as noted in the attachment.

What does the sidewall of your tire say for the MAXIMUM inflation pressure?  Never exceed that, no matter what some guy on the phone may tell you.

While I have a different size rear tire... I bought a set of Metzlers for my trip to Texas and back.  Inflated to the Bike's recommended pressure of 40lbs for the rear tire and rode it fully loaded, nonstop for 8 days down... a few hundred miles with a standard load while visiting, and then another 8 days fully loaded, nonstop on the way back to Alaska.

8,990 miles total for the trip, then another 3,000 miles to finish the season up here.  While the rear tire was ready for replacement (treadwear), it had no visible signs of defect...  cupping or irregular treadwear whatsoever.

The cupping issues must be associated with a particular batch of tires, as almost everyone up here... Harleys or Goldwings, all ride on Metzler.

Myself, I'm giving the Michelin Commander II a try, to see if I can get better mileage on these aggressive pavements.   8)

Not sure which chart to use as they have highlighted  recommended tire pressure then have a list for my tire . looks like they have upped the pressure s.    I will have to call. Thanks For the help. As far a mileage goes I get 14000. out of the rear  but it is cupped after 6 or 7 K     Billy

I live by the chart that Jerry posted, Have had no problem with cupping or anything else for that matter, I get about 10,000 on rear (with a little tread wear left) before i change it, have about 14,000 on front with plenty tread remaining and we ride 2 up about 98% of the time. Who ever said that running the recommented tire pressure will make it ride rough and not handle as well needs to try it first, Because thats what i thought as well, Bike rides and handles better with the higher tire pressure, I think the sidewalls on these tires are softer than most, more pressure stiffens them and they will not wash out in the curves.

But what do i know, I have run met's for years on several different bikes and large % of our riding is on the twisties here in E. TN. I will buy metzlers as long as i can find them.

Oh, The bike i have now is a 07 SERK

Installed the new rear tire. Put 47 # of pressure. The ride is great it does not seem to have made it  harsh. I will call Metzler and ask to clear up the confusion on the chart. The Max sidewall pressure is 50 # so I am safe there.   It does make sense that the cupping is do to low pressure so I hope this works.  Billy

I don't know about that Billy, seems to me the stock Dunflops had a lot of issues with cupping as well, even when run at their max inflation pressure of 42 psi.

The charts I posted are the MINIMUM cold inflation pressures.  If you are happy running 47 with a sidewall maximum of 50, it's not a problem.  However, you should be able to run the pressure on that chart and not have premature wear or cupping or any other defects.  I'm not sure why they single out those particular sizes for different pressures, you might want to ask them.

Thanks Jerry, I had 2 sets of Dunlops and they cupped front and rear. So I am on my 4 set of Metzlers.  Only had trouble with the rear. I hope the 47 # corrects the problem. Thanks for the help Billy
