Need help on battery removal
« on: May 06, 2013, 10:18:24 AM »

Does anyone know how to remove the battery?
The nylon web pull strap broke off! I can't get a way to grip the battery to move it at all.
Help!  :nervous:

Screw longer than normal bolts in to the top holes in the battery terminals.  Grab the bolt heads with vise-grips and lift it out.  You can do this without shorting the + side.

Either that or you can rig up a strap out of webbing (like for tie downs for instance) and bolt it to the terminals with those longer screws.  Once you get the battery out, use some of that same heavy duty webbing to make a new strap to replace the broken stock piece.

I did something like this only just took a piece of webbing and put around the middle of battery tied a knot in the top so I can get my hand in and pull up and then slide it back in place and leave there for the next time. Cheap and easy.

Have also used 10g cable with good terminals well crimped then bolted to the battery posts.  Just need something to get a lifting/holding point so it can be lifted.  No room for fingers on the side like at least most autos still allow.

on bad batteries, I simply grip the terminals with vice grips and yank the mf out.

I just finished getting the battery out.  I went to the hardware store and bought the longer bolts- worked great!

There are lots of fancy "specialty" tools out there that, sometimes, really aren't that special at all.  Simple solutions are sometimes just as easy and usually a whole lot cheaper.  :drink:

Well.... d'uh.  The seat is bolted down and they use stirrups on the footboards....   Geez....

The only hassle is when they open the tour pak.

I actually tried having a few husky buddies help me shake the bike upside down.  I quit when I found out the gas tank was leaking gas all over me, and one of the guys was smoking a cigar.   :drink:

You didn't follow the service manual.  It explicitly states that all smokers must hold the remote control for the beer fridge at a safe distance when turning the fuel tank upside down.
