oil leak
« on: June 01, 2013, 03:15:56 PM »

Was cleaning my bike yesterday and was shocked to see a bad oil leak under the bike.  Only done 10,000k.  Topped it up a little after a 2,500k trip last month and hoping it was just that in terms of possible overflow - though I doubt it as I am very careful.  Cant seem to see where it is coming from!  Any history of new 110s leaking much?  It is a 2011  SESG.

So where exactly do you see the oil?  And are you sure it's motor oil and not primary or trans?

There are plenty of possibilities of course, but I'm not aware of any widespread oil leak problems since the 2007/2008 models.  One possibility that pops up occassionally is the oil filter adapter plate for the oil cooler, which can come loose during filter changes.  That one's pretty easy to fix.  And of course when changing the filters most places tend to get oil all over the front of the engine including on and under the mounting plate for the oil cooler.  If you just recently had the oil changed that could be your "leak" as well.

Clean the engine well, then let it run while you inspect for leaks.  If you just look after riding, the air flow tends to blow oil all over and it will be hard to find the source.

Bet it's shift shaft seal.  Common problem.  Best to replace with a Cometic seal.  Bitch to change though - gotta remove the inner primary to get at it.

Ish. I had the same problem. Just could not pin point it. Sometimes it would leak a lot and sometimes nothing at all. It was so frustrating that on a 10 day ride I had oil covering the side of the bike and the next day nothing.

This is what was finally done to resolve the problem.

They found 3 different leaks. They would come and go with how hot and cold the weather/motor got. At the end it was so bad there was puddles under the bike.

All is well now.

Dealer mechanic came back to me today saying there were some loose gearbox casing bolts near the exhaust brackets on the bike that were weeping.  He tourqued them and took for a ride - says it has fixed it and reckons vibration has loosened them originally.  Anyone ever heard of this? :nixweiss:

That's a common problem that's been reported on and off since 2009.  I guess we can assume this is another problem Harley hasn't bothered to fix in production, even though it was widely reported.

If it happens again, remove the bolts for the exhaust bracket, clean the threads (male and female) thoroughly, then reinstall with blue Loctite and a torque wrench.

Good idea to check the torque on these bolts each time you do an oil change.  Very common problem.

I have been chasing oil leaks also. (11 SE Street glide 6000 on the clock). Last summer it started puking oil on a trip, I checked all the obvious since it had just had an oil change prior to leaving. I couldnt pin point it on the road there was so much friggin oil on everything. There would be a silver dollar size spot on the ground at a gas stop, so I kept on top of it and got home. The dealer said they would get on it within two days since I didn't have an appointment. No problem, Three weeks later they hadn't looked at it yet. That is when I had to get "persistant" Problem was oil cooler plate and oil press. sending unit. So chapter Two, I pull it out the other day and oil! WTF. Just got it back this week, This time it was the tranny, they had to go "deep" into it they said. Seals, a bearing race. So there is my sad oil story I sure hope I'm done. I love the bike and have not had any other issues with it.

Dealing with that same issue on a 2013 SEUC with less than 700 miles on it. Noticed it after about 200 miles, just a light seepage at the joint line. Torqued the screws I could get to without removing the exhaust, none were noticeably loose though. Goes in next week for the 1K service, hopefully they will make it right.
