Sticky Throttle By Wire Sensor?
« on: June 04, 2013, 09:02:18 PM »

The first time that this happened was a couple months after purchasing my FLHXSE3.  Throttle became "sticky", took more torque to get it to turn then gives away.  Makes riding much more dangerous at low RPM's in low gear.  Harley dealer gave me a new one and I put it on, I was putting new bars on at the time anyway.  The new throttle has been fine for 10 months but about a week ago, it started doing the same thing and is getting worse very time I ride.  I'm wondering, did this start after I rode in the heavy rain (about two weeks ago)?  Is this just a bad bunch of sensors that the MOCO has sourced?  Is there an easy fix?

Anyone with a similar situation?

I guess I'm the "Lone Ranger" with this issue?

I have the same problem, I took it in to the dealer under warrantee, but because I changed out the bars its not covered. So I'm taking it back to the place that did the bars and see if they will fix it, since its been that way for a while and getting worse since they installed the bars. Its possible that they damaged it when they put the bars on.

I thought of that also, but my bars have been on since December and the problem just started a couple of weeks ago.  I can't figure out the why of the problem.

had throttle response issues on 08 sg. just recently had indy change out grips. couple hundred miles later, bike just slows down, won't take fuel. it'll idle but won't rev up. come to find out, with wire throttle H-D recomends that you change thottle position sensor & plug if you do any mods to grips, bars etc. indy did this at just cost of parts & i've had no problems since (as of yet). originally looking atfuel pump ,or line, filter strainer type of things. just food for thought. hope it'll help

cowboy, I had indy change out the grips at Christmas (for my bros, who now rides my sg) . problem just started about month ago. he thought he had run out of fuel, but omly had 100 mi on tank. could cut motor off, wait min, start back & run fine for awhile (maybe all day ) then it would happen again. check throttle position sensor. good luck

The stickiness is internal to the sensor and has no bearing on aftermarket bars.

My STOCK '12 FLTRXSE did it... my '09 never did. I think HD sourced more cheap chinese parts between 09 and 12

I agree, it's a bad bunch of sensors that MOCO has sourced.  I took off my grip, took off the little black end cap on the sensor and WD-40ed the chit out of it.  Did not help at all, when you twist the control knob, you can feel it dragging internally.

The first time it happened, I was putting new bars on so it was no big deal.  This time, I'm not looking forward to and I doubt that the stealer will cover it under warranty with Yaffee bars on.  They should at least cover the sensor if I do the labor.

They have to prove the aftermarket part caused the failure to deny the claim... simply saying we wont cover it because your bike has aftermarket bars is CRAP.

There are many possiblities for root causes, among those could be a too tight fit in the end of the aftermarket bars that in turn distorts the sensor.  The other issue with changing bars is that it's too easy to damage the sensors when removing them from the old bars and reinstalling them to the new bars.  But as noted above, while they can throw all these "possibilities" out to try to explain the failure, they can't deny warranty coverage unless they can show one of those things actually did cause the failure.  Of course a little thing like a Federal law has never stopped Harley or it's dealers from trying to screw customers over, and they are unlikely to comply without being pushed to do so.

BTW, plenty of these sensors have failed on bikes that are still running the factory installed stock bars.  Ask H-D how they explain those.

I always like the "Grouchy Old Farts" advice.  We'll have to meet up someday Jerry.

I agree with ya Cowboybagger.  Jerry has a great way of putting things to words.

I don't know if this would effect your problem or not.  But if your break lever/controls are just a little to tight against the throttle it might be pushing out out the sensor in the twist grip.

I have not had this apart before.  So I am not sure.  I believe I read this in one of the threads but it may have been for a sticking throttle.

Thanks Todd.  I took my grip off and the problem is internally with the sensor.  I can twist the small cogged end and can really feel the dragging.
