New, the '12 popped, backfired, stalled, burned oil, and sounded like loose marbles were living in the motor.  the motor sounded like a harmonious collection of mechanical noises.   The howling from the primary

On my '12 SG, the oil would be sooty black after the first 10 mile ride.

With the backfiring, stalling etc sounds like it needed a tune.
What mods did you have done to the engine/exhaust?

Marble sound may have been engine knock/pinging! tune and fuel would have fixed this if it was the problem.

Black sooty oil.
How often between oil changes?

Howling in the primary.
Tensioner would have over ratcheted to cause the howling.
Sounds like you had a rotten egg there.

I must be one of the lucky one's, my 12SG runs great and oil looks like golden honey between oil changes.
Only mechanical issue I had was drive belt was a little tight.
Warranty issues is another story but only cosmetic to the total of approx 4500k

BTW, Very nice bike, that's got to be the best colour choice.

Thanks for the comments.  I really loved how my SG looked, and I'm liking the new Ultra more and more.  Orange really is the fastest color.

Well, I've been able to put a few hundred miles on the new 'sickle, and it's doing great.  :orange: :pepper: :apple:   I'm enjoying riding more now that I can relax, and not have to think about every new noise coming from the drivetrain.  I am thinking more and more that my SG was a bad seed.

I am having an issue with the stereo.  It cuts in and out as if there's a loose connection, but I'm not going to sweat it;  that's a warranty issue, and doesn't affect the important stuff.  It wouldn't be a Harley if nothing goes wrong, right?

It being my first Harley, I was told it (the sooty oil) was normal by the dealership.  I also was told that the bike using a quart of oil every 2000 miles was normal, even on a new bike.  I probably changed the oils every 3000 miles.  Noises?  All normal with the 110, according to dealers.  I installed an M6 primary chain tensioner in the '12, and the howling from the primary was much better.  I haven't heard any of that howling on the '13 yet.  In the '12, I replaced the compensator at 5000 miles.

The backfiring, stalling, and heat almost completely disappeared when I changed the pipe and put on a fuel controller (the Cobra PowrPro).  The various motor noises never went away.  I made a lot of mods to the '12:  2-1 pipes, TTS, RSD intake, 113 pistons and cylinders, 10.5 pistons, 30t sprocket, etc.  Like I said, the '12 SG was running really strong when I traded it.  There were still lots of ticking and primary noise, though.  I was tired of the dealers telling me it was "normal".

"I am having an issue with the stereo.  It cuts in and out as if there's a loose connection"

Lil, you didn't stay when it was cutting in and out.  My '12 developed an issue on AM/FM stations where they would drop out from time to time and finally I couldn't get anything.  Before taking it to my dealer and before removing the faring, I worked from the antenna forward to inspect the cable.  Sure enough, the factory folks had not tied up the extra antenna cable correctly.  It was actually rubbing against the drive belt and had worn the cable in two...don't you just love quality control?  Anyway, I spliced the cable, routed it as it should be and no issues since.  The extra cable on the SESG is so if you decide to add a tour pack, you have the slack to extent the cable.  As you have an Ultra now, may not be the same problems/issues.  May want to check the main cable going into the radio, too.  Have heard some of them had not been fully inserted from the factory (see quality control comment above).  I'm just throwing some ideas around.... :juggle2:

Haird, it cuts out with the CD, AM, and FM.  Seems to be getting worse and worse.  I haven't hooked up the iPod yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check the connections when I get home next week.

It sounds like the radio will have to be replaced. Mine went out at less than 3000 miles. Now here is when you get pissed! The MOCO will replace your brand new radio with a reconditioned radio! I complained & they say that is the way it is! 2 years later the replacement radio is doing just fine!
