Custom (form fitted) earbuds (question)
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:01:15 PM »

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the form fitted earbuds like some vendors sell at rallies??  Is it worth the high cost? And can you really hear the quality of music based on the various range speakers they build into the buds.  Anyone using Bluetooth wireless earbuds??  (I just want the earbuds, don't need the mike versions available)

thanks,
Dan

I had mine done at BigEar.com
They are the best investment in the world for a cyclist.

They double as earplugs and headphones, so no ear damage and you can listen to music or gps at a very reasonable level.
They also stay in at 150+ mph with no helmet on.  Don't ask!

I love them!

Thanks FireDood (are you also Dave??) if so, related to A.J.??

I know you said don't ask, but 150 MPH and no helmet??  But to be sure, good sound at 150 MPH, right?  Oh by the way, Harley has other color schemes besides orange and black - just saying.

I've used the ones from PlugUp.com.  Both of the ones I've tried, the S-plugs and the molded-to-your-ear version, have been the 2-speaker upgrade type.  The sound has been very good, and the noise blocking is excellent.  For me, the S-plug ear buds are more comfortable (they're softer) and much easier to insert and remove.  The molded version, because it is tighter, offers better noise isolation, but is also harder to insert and can be painful to remove.  One more thing:  Both of these come with a 3.5 mm plug, which is fine for an mp3 player, etc., but requires an adapter ($40 ?) to use with the HD 7-pin plug on an Ultra.

This is what I use now: For $44, you can get this lightweight headset http://www.ebay.com/itm/230807567967?item=230807567967&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OC:US:3160&vxp=mtr with a small boom mike, either ear buds or ear "muffs," and the HD 7-pin plug wired in.  The sound quality and noise isolation aren't as good as the ones above, but the cost is $150 to $200 less.

[/color Thanks HTH.  So the "S" type are a standard "off the shelf" product, not custom formed.  Sounds like you get good combination of sound quality and noise reduction.  The price certainly is right.

I use them when I want to listen to voices (football game, etc) because it is crystal clear and can hear every word. Shen listening to music, I prefer the RG sound system. Just something about being surrounded by the music while riding that is pretty cool!

If you have an iPhone these are great

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sennheiser-CX-680i-Noise-Isolating-Sports-Headphones-Smart-Remote-And-Mic-/380623553977?pt=US_Radio_Comm_Headsets_Earpieces&hash=item589eee85b9

Kevlar wrapped cable, water proof, and 2 year warranty. I use them for running and weight training and they do not fall out. Very comfortable, multiple ear attachments for great fit, and they have play, skip, volume, and call answer function built in.

The biggest reason to get the custom molded buds is the noise cancellation.  Anything over 45 minutes of continuous riding can result in permanent hearing loss.  That is why earplugs are highly reccommended.
Well, the custom buds serve a dual purpose and that is what makes them invaluable.  You have to trust us on this one.

It's a good sales pitch, but I wouldn't want to cancel outside noise completely and pipe in music. You really need to be hypervigilant while riding. Taking away your hearing will put you at more of a risk if your sharing the road with anyone else. Yes listening to anything increases risk, and is illegal in some states for both ears, but hearing nothing except for tunes just puts you at more of a disadvantage. JMO

I agree, if you wear ear buds or ear plugs which completely block all exterior noise, could be unsafe if one does not hear traffic around.

I recently used an inexpensive set of earbuds on a recent trip to Deals Gap which worked fine for music and Garmin directions and still had good awareness of traffic around me.

I am really not trying to sell you guys on anything.  Just trying to relate my experience after 22 years of riding.

They DO NOT cancel all hearing.  They work like any other earplug.  They cancel a certain number of dbs.  I believe it is 80, which makes them equivalent to a good set of earplugs.  And if you guys don't wear earplugs on long rides, good luck with your hearing in 10 years.

I will now keep my comments about them to myself.

I've been ruuning molded earbuds for about 10 years now, absolutely love them. I sent the set I have back last year as one speaker seemed low to me and they just replaced them for only a few pennies. I used http://www.earinc.com/
