Lost oil line . . . . . . . . . . engine damage???
« on: October 09, 2006, 07:49:51 PM »

Lost one of the oil lines off the oil cooler today while accelerating hard away from a stoplight.  I was into third gear before I realized there was a problem (oil-soaked rear wheel was getting squirrely).  Left about a 400 ft. trail of oil on the pavement and didn't get the bike shut down until I got on the shoulder of the road and realized I had "0" oil pressure.  There are about two quarts remaining in the pan, even though the trail makes it look like nothing could possibly be left.

I'll be taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning, but curious if anyone has an idea if the engine would have suffered any damage from this, or if it should be OK. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Dude,

Bummer. Your fine. The parts are still covered in oil. You shut it down with plenty of time. You probably have more of a mess than anything.

Brian

Had a similar issue on the Screaming Eagle.
When I got back from Reno was out riding and wound up with oil EVERYWHERE!
Hard first to second,
Hard second to third,
Hard third to fourth,,,, then
I thought DAMN,, the tire is spinning in fourth.
The oil filter came loose, lost almost two quarts.
Put it back in,,, rode it for 4K more miles before I sold it.
Never had an issue or concern from that incident.

You should be fine!

One more for the "your ok".Since the engine did not start knockin' and you shut it down quickly then you'll be ok. Did the line break or just come loose?

Hey 103tHunDer, that's one of the advantages of the synthetic oil (supposedly)...is that it stays on the metal surfaces much better than conventional.....doesn't drain off, rather 'clings'....hopefully that gave you a increased margin of protection too.  Other than that, how's it doing?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif] har!  [smiley=drink.gif] spyder

Jim, sorry to overlook your question . . . . . . the line just came loose, slid right off the fitting.

Think this could be the result of the additional oil pressure from the Feuling pump???

I was fortunate this happened when and where it did.  I was in the triple digits under WOT at least three times today.

Brian, did you say a oil line 'broke' or came loose?  was it near the oil cooler or filter housing or where.....I've got to do some 'checking'.  [smiley=nervous.gif] har!  [smiley=drink.gif] spyder

Brian you are in fact fine, The lifters in your motor would have started to colaspe before you got any other engine damage. Have fun with the new mods (it sounds like you already have) See you in 2 days.

Brian, Sorry to hear about the oil line, and glad to hear it didn't happen at a really bad time.  I'm no expert, but sounds like everthing is going to be fine, especially since you still had two quarts in the pan.  Jorge had this same problem a while back, if you remember, but his oil line split.  He lost a lot of oil, but no harm was apparently done, as he's put 3 or 4K on it since that happened.

The biggest PITA is getting all that slick synthetic oil off everything!!  But the oil being slick and clingy is probably what saved any damage.  Get her cleaned up, the oil cooler hoses checked out, and you'll be good to go.  I've got a set of spare hoses, if they don't have 'em...they're packed in my tool kit.

See you tomorrow!!!

Brian,
I split an oil line on mine in aug.
Just finished the Kyle Petty Charity Ride and was heading home. The guy behind me noticed oil on his windshield. The oil Gauge was on 15 psi and dropping fast at 85 mph. I hit the off ramp just as the lifters collapsed.
The had part is finding the oil lines now. The old part numbers are out dated and the new updated version has a number but you cant get yer hands on one yet  (The B version ).
I have had a set on order now for two months, just for a spare. If one actualy breaks at this point just change the filter housing to a stock one with out the oil line connectors.
Fyi , After replacing the line that busted my motor sounds and runs as always.

Brian,

One of the nice things about roller bearing / ball bearing engines is that they can and will survive short term oil pressure loss with no harm.  A plain bearing engine on the other hand would probably have sustained severe damage under the same circumstances.
