Pre amp outs on stock head unit??
« on: June 21, 2013, 01:20:31 PM »

I know most of y'all just get rid of the stock HK head unit, but I want to stay with the HK, at least for now...

What benefits (if any) would I get by sending the stock HK to Iron Cross Audio for them to install pre amp outs??

'Am going to run J&M 500w Rokker amp, Rokkers / XTs in fairing/lowers.

Thanks,

I installed the pre outs so that i would not have to cut the factory wiring harness. The new rokker xt amp no longer has the ajustments on the outside on the amp. they are now internal and have to be adjusted via a cable and software. You will need to adjust the gain to match the preouts for the best sound. I ordered the old amp pt# from a retailer and got the new rokker xt instead. Had to send it to JM along with my head unit for them to program the new gain setting.

'Was thinking more about clarity / sound quality bypassing the HK amplifier section with the preamp outs.

'Just picked up another HK head unit, so that I could send to Iron Cross Audio for preamp outs and rear aux, with minimal down time.

'Thought that I wanted the new programmable Rokker 500w amp when I was ordering  from Eastern Performance Cycles the week before last, and was thinking that they "pushed" the last of their old stock (nonprogrammable) on me when they told me that I would have to wait another week or so to get the new programmable Rokker 500. The guys at Eastern did tell me that the cables for the new programmable amps weren't out yet and that it would be a pita to send it back etc... So I guess that Eastern did me a favor by sending me the "old style" Rokker 500 so that I could set the gains myself and not have to mess with sending the amp / H-U back and forth. Thanks Eastern!

Does anybody know the shortest RCA cables available (and where to get them) that I can use to connect the H-U to the fairing mounted (hanging on the HU) Rokker 500??

This seems to be least expensive 12 inch set. I'd contact seller just to make sure its not a stereo jack at other end just because it shows only one side.

just installed mine today, go get some male x male rca plugs which i got from radio shack gold plated. they are about 2in long which give you enough to plug the amp to the radio. funny i ordered from eastern also useing the old pt# and got the new one which has a "P" on the end of it.

For me it was just the opposite, ordered the new part # w/the "P" and got the old part# w/the "R". I'm glad it worked out that way, so that I can tune it myself. 'Going to send my HK to Iron Cross Audio tomorrow for f/r preamps, rear aux and switched headphone output. I'm psyched :bananarock:

Im in the process of doing a stereo install on my 12SERG , talked to Rich (tiff2) about this very same question. Although he did do it on his HK head unit he told me it was pretty much for bragging rights and the human ear probably could not tell the difference with or without RCA outputs , especially on a motorcycle. I did not do it on mine and am not going to.
Upside-----------no freight , no 110$ to do the process, no down time while waiting .
Downside , all you guys who did it can tell me what an idiot I am and that my stereo would have really been something if I had just done that one little thing!

'Just was able to pick up an extra HK very reasonable, so no downtime and can sell my original radio (already have a local buyer lined up) to offset most of the cost. If not for it basically "falling in my lap", I probably wouldn't do the preamps, rear aux, or switched headphone jack.

To me, the amplifier circuit of the HK is the weakest link in that radio.

'Let y'all know if it was worth it or not when I get things hooked up.

I'll probably be telling y'all that I was the idiot for doing it! LOL

It can only help, it  sure won't hurt. Maybe you can tell the difference or maybe not but you will have a cleaner signal for sure whether you can tell it or not. In your case I would have done the same thing.
