I had hoped that the exhaust mods would have been enough, and before moving to Georgia, it may have been.  So, I just removed them last week, and it has made a big difference in heat dissipation.  For now, the negatives mentioned by everyone are an acceptable trade-off.  I have a set of soft lowers from a previous bike that fit the crash bar, so I carry them in the saddlebag in the event of unexpected rain or cold. That said, I like the look and function of the lowers, and I would REALLY prefer to have them installed.  What is the source of the quick disconnect that has been mentioned?   Finally, those of you who have removed the vents - is there a downside?  Do you retain any rain protection at all?

I came from an Ultra with lowers and do miss them, but I think I have slightly better cooling without them. I also purchased a set of biker boot straps to keep my pant legs from blowing up around my knees when using the highway pegs.

I finally got my lowers painted and installed.  Went for my first ride and all I can say is that it is mixed.  I love the fact the buffeting coming up over the fuel tank has been greatly reduced and makes for a better overall ride.  On the other hand, the upper thighs got really warm and my boys got down right hot; I guess this will make cold weather riding better.   :confused5:

I made the conversion to the 2010 SERG mounting brackets and have the vented lowers.  Ran the vents wide open.  When I finished my 30 mile ride I checked the oil temp and it was 247 degrees on a 75 degree day.  I don't recall seeing temps that high and most reading have been around 220-230 degrees.

I plan on running the lowers for awhile to see how the perform over time.

Does any know if the Harley Mid-Frame Air Deflectors work?

I'm not sure if the mid frame deflectors help or hurt. I installed them on my '07 SEUC, had heat issues on the rear cylinder like chrome bluing on the heat shields. They came standard on the '13 SEUC but the darn thing is so hot I can't tell if they help or not. Having the pipes swapped in a couple of weeks and a tune, I am sure that will cool it off a lot.

As far as the lower fairings go, I removed the adjustable vent in mine to get more airflow on the engine. Never ran any bike with them closed, even in winter. I like the looks of the lowers and really appreciate them when it's cold out or I get caught in a shower but they do seem to restrict the airflow across the engine. Some will say they direct more air across the engine but I am suspect of that statement without some wind tunnel tests to back it up.

I shoulda said the etms or whatever it is called does not come on as much.....I do like the lowers for protection from fod on the gams and for rain but once I took them off, glared them and put them away, they have stayed off...prolly the laziness... 8)

I don't have an Ultra, but do have lowers, FLTRX.  And I don't remove them.

The scooter could care less, it all about my comfort.  And while I might be a little cooler on a hot day without them, it really doesn't make that much of a difference.  After 4 or 5 hours at highway speed I want them on.  And being as I actually do ride in the rain on occasion, I glad to have them when the road is wet.  They also help to limit that air that comes up under the fairing.  Lots more buffeting on my head without them.

humm, thats funny, i noticed the opposite, with em on the air seems to channel up the tank from between the lower fairing and the removeable lower and hits me in the chest more. also my glasses vibrate more from the updraft wind at hwy speeds
