Turning Signal help!!!
« on: June 29, 2013, 12:37:40 PM »

I posted this once before, but commenting on someone else's thread.  I have been in search to relocate my front turning signals off the handlebars.  I do not want driving lamps & I want to keep the windshield option, even though I only use it on long rides.  Any input on this from anyone?  :wall:

Try this kit from H-D.  It's similar to the one on several e'glide CVO's, but without the passing lamps.

You're describing the signals on a Street Glide or the short lived Road King custom.   Easy to do.   The kit Jerry posted will get you home.

Thank you!  Tough job?  Is this something I should have done by HD?

Read through the attached instruction sheet and see if you feel comfortable doing what they say.

The PDF file with the install instructions doesn't quite cover all you'll have to do.  It neglects an extra chore that will be part of losing the stock signals on the SE Road King.

The install of the new lights is a relatively easy chore.  The hardest part of the entire task, however, may be pulling the existing signal wires out of the handlebars as you remove the existing lights.

With any luck even that won't be a terrible chore.  But it won't be as easy as just bolting on and plugging in the new lights.  Open up the headlight nacelle.  Find and disassemble the plugs to each existing turn signal light.  Then, hopefully, remove the lights on each side and pull their attached harnesses out of the bars.  Most of the time they'll pull out without trouble or much difficulty.

Hey Don, I have a question for you.  Does the original turn signals that come on the bike not mount to just a side plate kit for relocating.
Or do you have to buy the whole kit.  Just trying to save a few $$ for those that want to do this.

Don can probably tell you for sure, but I would imagine since the '13 SERK comes with the bullet turn signals that you could just transfer them to the mounting plate.  The only question I'd have would involve the length of the wiring harness.  If the existing bullet lights will work, then people could just order the parts from that kit that they actually need.  There is a part listing in the pdf file called Service Parts.

I don't know for sure Greg.  Haven't looked up close at the newest SE Road King to see what signal housings they are using.  Can show what to look for to easily know for sure though.

In years past the handlebar mounted signal housings, even if a bullet housing, still mounted to the old style threaded stalk with a jam nut and the harness pigtail coming out behind it.  They did not have the depressed mount area that mated to the FLHX/RKC style front signal brackets.

FWIW Harley offers a kit that includes the brackets and the light housings.  So you can get it all in one box.  If you're signals are usable the brackets can often be scored on eBay for $50-60.  So there is money to be saved.

Attached here will be a pic of the bracket with a signal housing attached.  The "stalk" is part of the bracket and not part of the light housing.  That will give you an idea of the depression in the housing that the stalk must fit inside of.  The harness comes out of the light housing and hides inside that stalk.  Red circle around the stalk to highlight it.

Pic attached to next pic will be the mounting bracket only with the face that mounts to the light housing staring at you.  That will give a better idea of kind of depression you'll need to have (but probably won't) on your handlebar mounted bullet housings.

Thanks for the pics.  It definitely won't work they are flat with a little lock down bolt thread attached.

Looks like you would have to buy the whole kit and cabouldel.

That's what I expected.  Standard Road King handlebar mount housings.  Would've been really surprised if they'd reinvented that particular wheel.

that's a great picture Twolanerider, its from the set i have for sale on Ebay.  lol
these were taken off my 2013 flhx. you will need the other style signals. the ones that came on the road king won't mount to these brackets. i would have already done it if they did. since the other signals are needed I'm going to just go with the passing lamp setup. theres like 3 people watching that auction.
if your interested and they don't sell, I'll sell them to you for $40.00 shipped. just have to wait until the auction is over. our you could bid.
I'm pretty sure you can find the signals that fit on Ebay fairly cheap do you could save some money.

That's funny.  I've got a set of those brackets around here somewhere.  But it was easier to find a pic on ebay than find my parts and take pictures.  :drink:
