Colorado Fires
« on: July 03, 2013, 10:44:00 PM »

We are planning to cris cross Colorado starting on July 20, just wondering if riding will be safe with all the fires an d smoke. I'm interested if anyone knows if there are areas where riding conditions may not be safe or if smoke becomes an issue.

Thanks Supershooter

We were just there, smokey but ride-able in the Gunnison/Salida area, we had planned to travel 149 south but closers from the Creed fire changed our route. Smoke shouldn't be your biggest problem, closed roads will.

Looks like we may need to reroute before we leave, because Creede is in our route.

Most roads have reopened. Just check the day you head out.

149 thru Creede is now open. We were on hwy 160 from Alamosa to Pagosa Springs yesterday. No main road closures but back roads are closed and no stopping or standing over Wolf Creek pass signs are up. Smoke is not bad in that area. We are headed to Durango and Ouray tomorrow and I am not seeing any problems.

We started calling the hotels we have booked and one of them has closed due to smoke damage. They did say they will be reopening after the smoke damage is cleaned up. We leave two weeks from today, I hope they get it rolling sooner than later, for their sake and ours.

Are the fires winning or are the firefighters winning?

If you have a specific route planned, feel free to PM me the details - I will try to confirm road conditions for you, but no guarantees!

As of late, the East Peak Fire near Walsenburg is nearly fully contained.  Last week, I heard it was at 95% containment.  No evacuations were in place that I'm aware of.

Not much in the news lately here about the West Fork Fire (that's the one near Creede, South Fork, Pagosa Springs, etc).

The link above to www.cotrip.org is a great resource and it's usually very reliable and current.

So far as I know, the West Fork Fire is the only one that could cause any complications.  Smoke has been nearly non-existent in my area (north of Colorado Springs) for at least 8-10 days, whereas when it first started, it was pretty bad.

The Black Forest fire is 100% controlled (out).  The burn scar is open, but in all honesty, Black Forest isn't why people ride to Colorado!

I just traveled thru much of the southern and eastern portions of Colorado and encountered no signs of fire.  In fact, fog and rain storms were more of an issue than anything else...   :2vrolijk_21:

I just returned from Colorado-Utah trip last week. highway 50 all the way across the state is clear and 550 from Durango to Montrose is clear. Also 160 across the lower part is fine. Two of our guys too 149 south from Gunnison to South Fork and they didn't say anything.
