Where to hook up the heater gear?
« on: July 04, 2013, 03:56:06 PM »

Hi from a new member. I am posting this question for my brother-in-law. He rides a 2008 FLHT CUSE3. He recently bought Gerbings gear for himself and his wife. Where is the best place to pick up the power and grounds for the gear? The gear is supplied with a 15A fuse for each suit so obviously he needs about 30A total.

He really DOES NOT want to stack a lot of connections on the battery post. On his fuse panel he has a 30A, 15A and 5A spare. It looks like these are not used at the moment. Can we pick up the power from those fuses? And then where is the best place to pick up the ground?

If you have photos or advise and would prefer e-mail. My private e-mail is Jay.Hoover9024@yahoo.com

Thanks

Many if not most use the same plug that's already used for the battery tender.

Thanks for the idea. Will the battery tender wire be heavy enough to handle 30A that both suits require?

No.  The Battery Tender pigtail comes with a 7.5 amp fuse.  Btw, you need to determine the actual current draw of the gear, not the capacity of the fuses.  I would think that information would come with the gear?  Usually the draw is significantly less than the rating of the fuse.

As for connections, I'd be more inclined to install a power outlet (or two) on the bike where it would be convenient for each person to make individual connections.  Try this site for some ideas:    http://www.powerlet.com/

I hook them to the battery.  I run mine out the nose of the seat, hers comes up at the center of the seat where the backrest mounts.

Jerry,

Thanks. I saw the same thing on my battery tender. A 7.5A fuse on a 16awg wire. I looked up the max recommended amp load for a 16awg wire and came up with 30+ amps. Actually the chart I saw said we could run a 18awg wire but that would be cutting it very close to minimum of what is required.

You are correct about looking at the gear and calculating total watts. I can get that on the Gerbings site. The local electronics store has the connections similar to the tender connections. Plus they come stock with a 12awg wire so we might go that route. The powerlet idea is also good but he wants to keep it minimal.

Though many use the battery tender pigtails mounting a fixed power outlet is what I do.  Much prefer the option.  I then use that same plug as the battery tender plug also.  The fixed mount is neater and safer.  Only thing you need is an adapter cable for the end of our battery tender's cable and the heated gear's connection.

OK, this is straight from the Gerbings site. The jacket liner is 77 watts, the pants are 44 watts and the gloves are 27. That totals 148 watts or just over 12 amps. 2 suits will require 25+ total amps so he should be fine with a 16awg wire. The battery tender wire should be fine. I just need to do a little homework on what they use a 7.5A fuse.

I run mine fused off the battery.  Mine goes to a fixed jack I put in the mid frame heat shield, really easy to get to, and out of the way.
