We recently put an ad on Craigslist to sell my wife's Fatboy. This guy was a " merchant marine " and he wasn't  able to use a cell phone, yadda, yadda, and he was buying it for his father in Georgia, ....., just by reading the way it's worded, it's a bogus ad. How does the saying go, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". Word to the wise, yes!
Yes.

Once you send your money, you will never see it again and you will never see a bike show up either.  Was there ever really a question here?  Pure scam.

I'm also (retired) USAF.  Send the guy's name; we can see if he's legit.

Here's the ad:

http://www.anunico.us/ad/motorcycles/2005_harley_davidson_vrsce_screaming_eagle_v_rod_cvo_5500-2506652.html

Maybe if we swamp this person with rube like requests we can do some damage.

Very interested in your bike.
Please send information how the bike could be inspected. Additionally if in the mean time, may I have the VIN?
I just need the VIN to submit a loan to my credit union. I will get a check for a few dollars more than the advertised price, but you will have to send me the difference.
Is this something workable?
Please advice
Regards
Louis

Where this scam takes the ugly turn is when you get that E-BAY invoice.  The invoice page is manufactured by the scammer, not e-bay. The $$ goes to some off shore account, not e-bay. The whole thing is a out and out lie.

Don't EVER fall for chit like this!

When I was selling my '10 Tequila Sunrise SESG earlier this year, I got about a half-dozen of these scam attempts.

I met the guy I sold it to (from another Harley forum) halfway in NC, with the bike in a trailer - AT A BANK OF AMERICA BRANCH OFFICE. He gave me $7000 in cash, plus a check from State Farm finance for the remaining $20K... And I had personally called the State Farm agency prior to meeting him, to verify the check was good and the deal was legit. I deposited the check and the cash in my BofA account BEFORE I signed the title over to him inside the bank. I also had the bank make a copy of his drivers license, and we each signed a Bill of Sale with the VIN on it... One copy for me and another copy for him.

You can't be too careful these days. Lots of scam artists out there - buyers and sellers - looking for easy marks.

What Ken said...you can't be too careful these days.

One thing I've done over the years when selling vehicles is not meeting at my house for the potential buyer to view the item.  I meet at a WalMart or major, well populated parking area (bank parking lots work good, too...lot's of cameras).  That way, if it is a scam, they don't know where I live and what else is there they may want to "purchase" while I'm away at work.  After the first meeting, it's normally easy to see if they are serious or not.  Just one more step in keeping the honest people honest

Reminds me of a recent case here in Ontario. A guy has his SUV up for sale online and a couple of wacos come out to his place to take the SUV out for a test drive. One guy is in the SUV with the owner, the other guy is following in his vehicle. The owner of the SUV was later found dead. I don't think they have a motive for the killing as yet. You can't be too careful.

I'm also retired Air Force...the moving companies we contract out our moves to would never offer those options!

I'd like to find the scum just to beat their a$$ for saying they're AF!
