having noise trouble 2013 CVO Ultra
« on: July 20, 2013, 09:41:38 PM »

bike has 4000 miles.... stock, the motor had a little noise to it, but not bad enough to complain.

Installed a Tman Street Performer Kit from his web site and he recommended his 600SM cam with the package.

He also said to install 5.3 injectors. so I did... He also said to use his oil bypass Kit for the cam plate, so I put that in also.

also installed Zippers cam tensioners, adjustable pushrods....

The install was pretty straight forward, clearance the top rocker boxes... install the TSS tune that he said to use to break it in. Also used the recommend oil that he said to use...

Now the problem.... the motor has way more valve train noise than before..... WAY MORE !!! and it comes and goes as the RPM's get to 2200... noise comes in while accelerating and letting off the throttle.... it's a fluttering ticking noise...??

I rechecked the valve adjustment..... I removed the top rocker boxes and made sure there was no way the rocker arms where hitting any the ribs... I removed more than enough to make sure no hitting was going on....

Checked the oil level....ok....

Oil pressure is good with 32psi at idle and 45psi going down the road....

bike runs fine.... just noisy as hell... Tman is closed so I thought you guys might be able to give some sugestions...

I heard that the 600SM cam was noise when first introduced but is OK now????

HELP!!!!!

If it is a short duration cam with high lift, it will be loud.  That is why folks go with a longer duration cams like the s&s  551, 585 or the s&s 570.  My 110 has stock cams at this stage and I really want to upgrade. I am however very hesitant to do it as I know it will be louder that it is now. Is way more power worth way more noise? I am on the fence about that, and I hate it.

His kit , you really should ask him.. I have tuned only 1 of those set ups and it rattled enough that it could be heard over the already loud rinehart racing pipes.  But I did not build the engine just tuned it. Customer was madder than heck....

I did speak with him last week and he said to ride it and put some miles on it to get the lifters time to fully pump up..... Put a little more than 200 miles and the noise is the same....

I'm going to call him on Monday and load up the bike and carry it to him. He was going to do a tune anyway so I'll let him figure it out....

I just wanted to check, and double check to make sure it wasn't something I've done before carrying it to him.... The Parts and Head work look great, took my time and made sure everything was clean before installing, used assemble lube on all contact area's, lubed the cyl and rings with the break in oil he suggested, had all the correct tools for assy...

I'm baffled.... I just hate not being able to figure this out on my own before before taking it to him.... as far as my skills, I am an ASE Master Automotive Tech with 30yrs experence.....

And I always thought it was just Harley shops that handed out that kind of BS.

Trust me, it doesn't take lots of miles for lifters to "pump up", more like seconds perhaps.  That seems to be one of those stock answers some people hand out when they want you to go away and stop bothering them.  Btw, what lifters and pushrods did you use?  See if there is any evidence of the rods contacting the covers.

From the website:
"T-Man 600SM
This is a cam that we designed and had ground in July of 2007 in a gear drive for 99-06 models. This cam worked very well, but did have some valve train noise. Now with the new silent ramp design, we decided to bring it back in a chain style. This cam will have great bottom end torque and will pull hard to the top of the rpm range. It will work with stock beehive springs. We suggest 10.1-10.2 compression.

I've heard of the S&S adjustables hitting the upper(top) half of the cover assembly, but I think they(the pushrods) are a larger diameter than the Screamin' Eagle version

no, I don't think my noise has anything to do with pushrod tubes... it's diffidently a ticking noise coming from the top area.... but thanks for the tip....

What intake/AC are you using?  If it's a SE Heavy Breather or similar style you will hear a flutter and other valve train noise that you typically may not hear with other types of intakes due to the wide open exposed filter?

An S&S non-limiter lifter, loaded to .140" may be worth the effort. :2vrolijk_21:

That is very possible. When you installed the new oil pump you may have pinched an "O" ring. It happens, so I don't think you should have anything to worry about. He will need to pull the cam plate and pull the pump and install new "O" rings. He then can adjust the valves. So you will know just how much noise it will really make!!!

UPDATE....

He took it apart and found no reason for the sumping... said it look like top notch install...  :2vrolijk_21:

He states that the Axtell oil pressure plunger seems to be sticking slightly when he checked that part of the install.... said some of the cast cam plates seem to do that....  :nixweiss:

So he wants to put in his billit plate with 3 stage oil pump and S&S lifters....

Told him to do it.... I'll let you all know the results.....
